What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

Watched the Andy Samberg movie "Popstar - Never Stop Never Stopping" last night.

Very much Spinal Tap for the current generation. Thought it was very funny in parts and definitely a worthy tribute to Spinal Tap.

8/10.

American Honey

Never seen so many folk walk out of a film. It was just so long and without much of a plot it was probably just too plodding for many. I didn't mind it as debut girl Sasha Lane was so incredible to watch. Shia LaBoeuf continues to atone for Transformers and Elvis' granddaughter was horrible/wid (especially in her Confederate flag bikini).

Downfall - German film with subtitles about the last ten days or so of World War Two, based in Hitler's bunker. You've almost certainly seen one of the parody clips with Hitler losing it, and new subtitles so it looks as if he's commenting on some topical event.

If this film is accurate then he really was batshit crazy at the end. Getting twelve-year-old kids to face up to the Red Army, and having his own generals shot for retreating. Also amazing how some of his officers stayed loyal right to the end. Powerful stuff.

Goebbels was even worse than Hitler, I reckon.

His wife was no better. Killing her own children because she didn't want them growing up in a world without National Socialism...

Have you watched Hitler: The Rise of Evil, with Robert Carlyle? I watched that some time after Downfall and was shocked to see the Geobbels actually opposed Hitler in the early days. I wonder if it was a case of Hitler keeping his enemy's closer.

Anthropoid

Cillian Murphy, Toby Jones and Jamie Dornan in a film about the Czech plot to kill the third in command in the Nazi party in WW2.

Decent film, and quite brutal at times.

8/10

Imperium

Daniel Radcliffe and Toni Colette. Harry Potter is a fake Nazi who works for the FBI.

Bit of a bore and predictable.

5/10

Ouija: Origin of Evil

Surprisingly very good horror here. Much more reliant on trying to create some actual tension than just going for the cheap jumps although it does get a bit too much in the final act. Also, actual likeable characters all over the place. Must be a first for a mainstream horror.

7/10

My Scientology Movie 6.5/10

Very enjoyable as Louis is never anything but a supremely engaging presence but not massively insightful I guess.

Funniest thing was if the sciento-mentalists hadn't been all over his D about making the film he probably wouldn't have even had a film to make

Seen it years ago but have forgotten most of it. It was pretty good, IIRC.

I find the Nazis morbidly fascinating. I always end up watching any old stuff about them even though they are often quite upsetting.

I find Rommel to be a morbid curiosity, by all accounts he seemed to be a loyal German soldier and a fair person. From what I understand, any POW's under his authority were treated very well. He was loyal to his country, even tho he disagreed with what they were fighting for.

Watched a film on him the other day, with James Mason, "The Desert Fox".

Was pretty good, portrayed him as a tragic character.

There's apparently another film starring Mason as Rommel which is less sympathetic but I haven't seen it yet. Hopefully Film4 will stick it on sometime.

Permanently tuned to the History Channel then?

Have you not watched it recently?

The History Channel is now just nothing but "bloke finds something in an attic and tries to sell it" reality TV programmes, interspersed with documentaries "proving" that aliens caused the Pyramids/Battle of Hastings/Wall Street Crash/Hibs Cup win.
