5k seems very steep for a recon.

That's what my boss reckons it would be for a brand new one from Skoda/VW, reckons about half that for a second hand one.

Going to try and get a price for recon tomorrow but depends on how bad the damage is.

What has happened to it?

Every 4k miles or so my cylinder 1 spark plug is burning its tip off.

Swapping coil packs, and injectors, doesnt move the fault.

No fault code in the car until the tip has burnt off and caused a misfire.

Oil gathering around the spark plug, and the top of piston 1 is now coated in oil and is starting to get a hole burnt into it, presumably because of the burnt out plug.

Doing a compression test tomorrow, but all that combined with higher than usual oil consumption has me wondering if the piston ring is knackered, allowing oil to cover the spark plug, which is then causing misfires and the plug to start burning out. That's maybe the worst case scenario.

Got it remapped to run higher power two years ago, but to my mind it wouldve shown earlier/in all cylinders, if it was an issue with that.

Bollocks to ford. Hopefully going to look at a 57 plate suzuki swift. Only 42k on the clock.

A Suzuki Swift?  You’ll be hoping that wearing a mask becomes compulsory then so no-one recognises you driving it.

Aye, sounds like your piston ring is fucked, hope it doesn't lead to damaging the bearings.

Done a compression test today, cylinder 1 is at 150psi, and the other cylinder I checked was 155psi, both within specifications, which leads you away from piston rings.

Opinion of my boss is that its overfuelling, especially badly when under heavy load, and it's that which is causing all the issues. His advice is to go back to the guy who mapped it and get it removed.

A great plan but the place that mapped it is shut due to the lockdown, and I can't get in touch with them.

Moral of the story?
When manufacturers spend ££££Ms of pounds developing a car and then some  wizzkid says they’ve found a way to unleash its untapped potential by ‘mapping’ the engine, they have!. But it’ll 99% be at the expense of same engine’s longevity.

I wouldn't be going to some wizzkid then. Plenty of competent mappers can be found on owners forums, word of mouth and personal recommendations etc.

Engine hasnt actually blown up, btw.

Cars just been overfuelling in that cylinder and causing the plug to burn out.

Hopefully getting the map tweaked back whenever I can get a hold of the place who mapped it, until then just using it sparingly and using the wives car.

Arnold Clark due to collect my car and then run diagnostics on it. Again despite having the RAC report.

Then I suspect the fun will start as to whose paying.

Son in law was in similar situation but with Peter Vardy. Turbo went on his Golf not long after he got it from them. They fixed it no problem. Couple of months later it went again and they refused to touch it. Went down the same route as you are with the insurance company and they also involved the finance company as they were technically involved also. Car was off the road for over a year until the case was resolved. He got £100 and was told to fix the car himself!!
