Just heard it.
The bit above was the highlight.
I actually thought though that in some ways, English let Rae off lightly.
I don't even accept the bit he conceded about Scottish football being "better off" with a strong Rangers as opposed to "needing" such a thing.  I think it's worse off with the duopoly.
I also thought Rae should have been required to support his claim about plummeting viewing figures and to point out the damage he thinks this might do, not just to Aberdeen or Hibs, but to Forfar and Annan Athletic too.
The problem people like Rae and Souness have is that they genuinely, genuinely believe that Scottish football and the OF are synonymous.  The idea that for so many, this one horse title race is precisely AS interesting as the two horse one ie. not at all, absolutely escapes them.  They feel that what they say is so self-evidently true that they simply cannot countenance, let alone counter a challenge.  At least Rae, unlike Souness, faced one and foundered.  Again though, I'd have liked English to have hounded Rae more on his mumbling about "when it comes to negotiating deals", because he would once more have had no command of facts and figures.
Overall, good to see Rae sorted out, but I want to see the dismantling of such nonsense being more comprehensive, because it's very easily destroyed.

English also stated that this was the third night in a row he'd been asked to comment on peeeeness's ramblings. You could tell Tom took a bit of rye enjoyment as well as being a touch exasperated at being forced to, yet again, counter barely intelligible dribblings from the likes of Rae, bazzaF and Souness. Who for some reason, get a regular platform.

If Sevco fans weren't completely thick and so keen on buying into anything these muppets come out with, they'd realise that all these ex-players are rich enough to have stopped their club dying.  But they didn't - which is the only redeeming factor about them.

TBF to English, I don't think it looks good to trouser anyone too much.

Nah, when you're not a Rangers man you've got to control your urge to hammer into them, English has cash at stake,we don't.

That was enjoyable from English last night.

These ex rangers men professing to have the best interests of Scottish football at heart when they demand rangers be winning titles again is utterly laughable. Never forget these are two clubs who would be out the door within 3 seconds flat if they got a sniff of England.

I’ve said it before though, if what you want from Scottish football as a supporter is a large broadcast deal then yeah, a return to the duopoly probably is best.

And this is what annoys me in this debate, no one ever asks this question: what do the supporters actually want from Scottish football?

If it’s elite level football week in week out we wouldn’t be here, we’d be ploughing our money into sky and watching souness w**k over English football week in week out.

Once more, spot on.

This pursuit of a big gross TV contract is held up uncritically as one we should all embrace.  Of course, the truth is that it's historically been framed in such a way as to disproportionately aid the OF.  Its distribution has improved a little lately, but in SPL days, it had a massive, artificial drop off between 2nd and 3rd place prize money, the reason for which, was not hard to work out.

Such income is still given out as prize money and it still basically ensures that each away game for the OF sides is screened, meaning it's the other clubs whose gates are hit.

Of course, a simpleton like Rae will know or care, nothing of this, yet he gets asked for an analysis anyway.

This. Nobody will ever convince me a joint venture of all the "Rangers Men" couldn't gave saved the club.

Strange how the likes of Souness were staggeringly quiet during that period.

I love Tom English.  To be fair though, the BBC need to set him a stronger challenge than a list of thick ex-Sevco muppets.  Rae was just the latest in a long line of those idiots to make a severe arse of himself.  I loved the bit where Rae was spouting crap about there being no interest in Scottish football since Sevco's demise:
Rae:  I remember when I was playing in England bring other players up to see the games.
English: What games Alex?
Rae: Old Firm games.
English: Any other games?
Rae: Eh?
English: You realise there are teams other than Celtic and Rangers?
Rae: *Silence

Incidentally, Fat Sally was spouting the same pish on Talksport yesterday morning.  Utter weapons the lot of them.
They must all phone round each other before going on air, agreeing to spout the same shite so it appears to carry some kind of credibility.... but these fuckers ain't fooling nobody [emoji108]

Jim Spence might agree with that.

I think though that if you stick to facts and require the person you're speaking to, to support their claims, you won't be damaged.

Souness will stop pretending he cares  about anything to do with Scottish football as soon as he's finished promoting his book.

We're stuck with the rest of them as long as they have a gallery to play to.

Usually Thomas just shouts the same thing over and over again, while not accepting any view but is own. I wished I'd listened now so that I could've heard his words of wisdom.

Couple of things about your post. Firstly, I don’t think that I’ve heard Tom English shouting on Sportsound, and secondly, I love how people think that by calling someone by their full first name is somehow an insult or a put down! Tom (or Thomas) English was utterly magnificent last night.

Alex Rae is simply not capable of any kind of meaningful analysis.

I tend to give the same answer when people go on about Scottish football, finances and 'the quality of the product.' I grew up watching Morton playing in the old second division and attending matches in the juniors. I'm not in this for the glamour.

Using someone's full 'Sunday' name was a favoured literary device of the great David Leggat to indicate how 'staunch' or 'catholicy' the subject was. I miss those days.

Yes, the notion of "quality" is utterly spurious.

If that was my thing, I wouldn't watch Queens.  And besides, if I need a fix, I've got a telly.

After listening to Thursday night's podcast ,one thing is certain,we know how Kris "bloody foreigners" Commons voted in Brexit....

As for last night's joust English hammered Rae nicely, which I personally believe should lead to a showdown of sorts with English/Cosgrove and Spence in one corner with Fat Sally/Souey and Bazza in the other ,the informed reasoning of the first 3 against the inane blinkered Sevconians bile of the latter would be a popcorn fest to end them all.

Having Celtic v Kilmarnock as the commentary game is an utter joke. The Motherwell Hibs game is the clear standout.

I agree but no, the undefeated for however many games it is wankfest must continue

Are there other games on today? I tuned in at about 2 to hear the end of Off the Ball and the build up to the 3pm games but both FM and MW had the Hearts v Rangers game on. They then spent 20 minutes talking about Rangers (McLaughlin even managed to shoehorn Rangers problems into his interview with Levein) before going over to hear from Rodgers and eventually Clarke. I think it was after 5 to 3 before there were any team lines from any other games and then then it was just 2 from the Premiership? Not very useful for folk in their cars going to games, is it?
