Spectacular mistakes’ in MoD contracting system led to increased costs of £1.35bn on nuclear projects

How could we possibly be independent without the experience and expertise of the UK government?

An incredibly good travel book. I read a lot of the genre and it's one of the best this century.

he came to visit our office when he was DFID Minister and at a town hall was arranged as part of his programme, He elected to show a slide show showcasing his book and his travels through Afghanistan. it was as painful as it sounded and inflicted upon a captive audience.

Wasn't sure where to put this but JK Rowling accidentally copied and pasted something about the trans activist/women only have a fanny culture war stuff into a response to child's picture of some creature she's doing a story about and I keep laughing.

On another UK wide forum I'm on, the question was asked; why do people vote Tory? This answer is quite telling. Not one positive reason given. My "must be staunch as ...." response didn't get a reply from the poster. Democracy is democracy and everyone makes a choice, but this riles me (I support SNP but don't think they are a panacea).

Does staunch mean anything south of the border, other than being stubborn about keeping to the bowling club rules or something? They might not have known what you were on about.

I think not. That’s the real cause for cringe on behalf of the Northern Irish and Scottish little Britons; they’d lay down their lives to oppose Scotland and Northern Ireland departing the UK and yet the majority of normal English folk, whose approval and love they crave, are largely unaware of their existence (at best), likely to laugh at it, or apt to be embarrassed by it. The union probably just exists for most English people, and they might like the idea of it (given the other nations have no power over their governance) but they would probably rather see it dissolved than declare themselves STAUNCH and side with the utter crackpot loyalist crews north of the border or over the Irish Sea. Ironically, the hardcore element of the English electorate actively hate anyone not English and see all Scots and Northern Irish as feckless scroungers.

It’s not unusual to see loyalists on Twitter meekly begging for love from English nationalists, studiously ignoring the mockery of their nation, and protesting that they hate Sturgeon and their fellow Scots and just want their betters to love them back, please.

I'd assume if beating the SNP is their main goal then they ken fine what staunch means.

Aye, that poster. Got confused about him maybe replying to the OP in a mostly English forum, didn't read the post properly. I on the other hand would vote for anyone but an outright fascist to stop a Tory getting in, so not totally staunch.

The SNP don't half get some folk frothing. I mean, I hate the Tories as much as the next man, but if the only party capable of defeating their candidate was National Front? Or Stalin himself? Or Stuart Campbell?

Yeah, I'm not voting for those c***s. "Anyone but <x>" is a shockingly cowardly way to hide views you're embarrassed about holding.

The idea of Michael Gove pulling his wire to online porn is not crime of the century, or indeed a crime.

Thought I'd just put you all off your afternoon pints. Save the liver, likes.
