Handsome_Devil
Assuming the fantasy of keeping him was just that, I'm pretty happy...done and dusted early, and never mind not going to a rival or sportwashers, we can kid ourselves he just wanted to go home. What a signing, what a guy, what a couple of seasons, what a few months in particular...wish him nothing but the best.
wellboy1991
I don’t want to talk just now… I’m sorry.. this has hit me in the feels. Stay strong fellow Well fans. Maybe an Obika and Shields forward line might not be too bad…
Swello
Better to leave a (slightly weird, bearded) colossus, who will become better in everyone's mind with every passing lower division striker we sign, than to hang around and shatter the illusion.
one m in Motherwell
Almost shed a wee tear after reading the Instagram post there. Only the signing of Mikael Mandron will fix this
Swello
It says on Groningen's site that he's got a contract until 2026 - that's pretty good for a 32 year old to say the least and I would guess that's what makes it a sweet deal for him.

Carlsberg don’t do season run ins, but if they did …. Edited June 21, 2023 by Kapowzer
welldaft
Sad he is away but inevitable after the end to the season he has just had. He will be remembered fondly and if it goes Pete tong at Groningen then maybe a wee return will not be out of the question. That said I hope he tears it up. I will certainly be looking out to see how he is getting on. Undisclosed fee has apparently been converted into a significant fee. Either way he has done us a turn and hopefully Ketts can get a wee % of this money and whatever we end up getting for Max Johnston in order to offer Mandron a 7 year contract. (Kidding of course). AnderooMFC
ik ben verliefd Ik kan niet ontkennen Ik ben verliefd op de Groningse nieuwe nummer negen Hij is de beste ik heb ooit gezien Zijn voornaam is Kevin En zijn tweede naam is Van Veen Good luck to the wonderful mad b*****d. He's certainly earned this over the last six months. As an extra note, apparently his 11-game-streak also equals ones by Jamie Vardy, Gabriel Batistuta and Christiano Ronaldo. Ok, we're not Serie A or EPL opponents, but puts it in a top 12/13 run according to several random sites (Messi's at the top with 21 game streak). Idk if they'd count it as a continuation if he keeps it up at the start of the Dutch season...

Swello
Interesting that a couple of places, including The S*n are quoting the fee as 700k..

This is the part that seems to fly over the "bUt tHe mOtHeRwELL mAnAgEr SAiD..." crowd's head when they're looking at the reported fee. KVV was pretty explicit from the start that he wanted PAID. If we take the pinch of salt on Tony Joseph's £10k p/w salary shout, then fag packet numbers on a shree year deal at £520k p/a. £1.5m all in. Add in our fee (whether it's £500k up front or £700k all in...whatever) that's the guts of £2m on the table - not including any signing on fees or bonuses for the big man. And it's basically a sunk cost given KVV will be 35 upon the contract expiry. Looking at it as a Big Picture is feels like it's a deal that everyone can be quite happy with especially given his form post-China. We can bank whatever money we got for him and go some way to helping cover the shortfall on our Year of Bad Decisions. Fwiw, taken at face value I thought the bit of spiel from us in the announcement told everyone everything they needed to know (if they're actually paying attention) and it seems like it's pretty much been done in principle for a while: Quote "Following an initial approach we received some weeks ago and after a number of discussions with the player and his representatives, at a Board meeting last week, the Club reluctantly agreed to sell Kevin van Veen to Dutch side Groningen. Our strong preference was to retain Van Veen but it became clear that the club was not in a financial position to make a new contract proposal to Kevin that was competitive with what he was being offered by Groningen or to turn down the significant fee we were able to negotiate for a player with only a year remaining on his current contract. The Club has always been clear that revenue from player trading is required to ensure we are financially stable over the medium and long term." 'WellDel
The 'number of weeks' line is pretty vague, as opposed to the more standard 3-4 guideline or whatever. Hope I'm wrong, but kinda suggests it could end up a relatively lengthy absence. Would be a huge blow if he were to end up out long-ish term. Absolute linchpin in the team and I don't see us bringing in any more central defensive options with the numbers we already have. Would give you the fear running the first half of the season with the old Bev/Lamie combo.

If you're demanding a seven figure fee then are you happy for the club to pay a wage in that bracket to keep him there?
