Motherwell FC - A Thread For All Seasons

A shame to see such a good keeper more than likely sit on the bench every week. Then again, 10x your last weekly wage and get to say you play for your boyhood club. Fair fucks indeed.

Tbf hes still young for a keeper, could still have a decade long career left.

Exactly.

Also - doesn't do our recruitment pitch to sceptical English lower league players any harm at all - playing for Walsall one minute and then a bit of ML1 fairy dust later and you're off to The Prem....

Definitely. We may not have got a fee for Gillespie but if he ends up at Newcastle there's still a value when we're making that sales pitch. It would be one to file away in the 'Success' portfolio for the model.

The fact Robinson was talking about it actually being easier for us to recruit these days because agents and players know what we're about backs up the strategy - that only really comes about from being able to conistently point to players making steps up from our 'platform'.

Also, it may be because Gillespie was only 1st pick for about a season and a half which means there weren't many opportunities to move him on and also we've got Carson waiting in the wings but there definitely doesn't seem to be as much of a 'missed opportunity' feeling about losing Gillespie on a free as there was with Randolph.

Agree with that; felt at the time that it was almost negligence not getting a fee for Randolph but the market for keepers can be more than a bit odd.

To be honest, Gillespie was brought in as back up for Trev anyway - it was only due to Carson's injury/condition that he automatically became first choice.

The fact we got nothing for Randolph is pretty much symptomatic of how we were run back then...these days we'd be putting out brand strategies all over the place.

I think we all get that we can't make a profit/big fee on every player - some will run their contracts down as is their right. The difference between now and when Randolph was about is that we have made a lot of money on player sales/compensation over the past few years whereas it was hugely frustrating then that we dismantled the best team in years with very little to show for it (and Randolph was the biggest example).

It's actually quite difficult to get your head around the extent to which our transfer stuff is better now than it was under Dempster.

I see your captain is in the press sooking up his boss's erse...

A footballer saying nice things about his manager? Something that has literally never been seen before.

The problem with Skippy Sunday stuff is that the bits that I enjoy - all the Celtic supporters in the Cooper standing there as the few 'Well supporters were going tonto after the goals. seeing Celtic players that I detested in pieces, supporters in tears, Gerry Britton pretending to be happy, etc is followed by the bit I really  don't like - Delirious peepil at Easter Rd.

If there was a way to edit it in the crowd shots of the Rangers support after the playoff 2nd leg, it would be perfect....
