Double Winning St Johnstone FC Thread

Like I said 90% of his signings have been an utter disaster.

He signed like 1 of those players that played any major part of those cup runs. Tommy Wright signed the rest.

Since he's been allowed to sign players he's signed 3-4 players for quite significant money. None of them have played. One released after 4 games another out on loan in Ireland until his contract expires. He's had more money to spend than every manager since the 90's has had combined.

Here's some examples for you that'll evidence the point. Don't listen to everything you hear his agent say on Sportsound.

Vertainen - played 3-4 times then shipped out on loan. 40k

Mahon - 100k played 2-3 league game and release for nothing after 12 months with another 2 year on his deal.

Crawford - the fans really don't like him. Will have 1 good game and then 7 shite ones. Was given a 3 year deal despite not impressing during a loan period.

Dendoncker - sent back 6 months early during his loan spell.

Muller - recalled because Davidson wasn't playing him.

Butterfield - unfit, absolutely past it and released after 6 months.

MacPherson - ALWAYS injured. Paid a fee for him despite him already being at the club on loan and had already signed a pre contract. The club was ran rings round them by St. Mirren.

Ingram - signed and did not play a single minute before being released.

Reece Devine - recalled as Davidson wasn't playing him.

Theo Bair - 6ft 3 target man who can't jump, win headers or compete physically whatsoever. 40k. 1 goal.

Charlie Gilmour - Jesus fucking Christ.

Effe Ambrose, signed played 5-6 games then was completely jettisoned from the squad. Ended being sent out on loan for the remainder of his contract after being at the club probably 8-10 weeks.

Solomon-otobar - produced very little. Left after like 3 months. Zero goals

2 year deals to multiple players in their mid 30's. Considine who's played well but a 2 year deal with option of a 3rd at 35? 😬

They've offered over 100k for Jordan White.

There's been a few that have had pass marks but none and I mean none you'd say have been a brilliant signing.

Without question the majority of the fans want him out. They don't expect miracles but the team on the pitch are just absolutely depressing and he combines it by walking out of interviews when asked a question he doesn't want to answer like he's Jose Mourinho. If he does speak, he mostly speaks complete shite. "We played really well" after a 2-0 defeat with no shots on target etc.

They don't expect miracle but...they do expect miracles

Sorry, why is Daniel Phillips a bit-part player in this squad?

No chance he can be from now on, hes absolutely strolled this.

Extending his deal in the next few months is important. Know it expires in 2024 but you dont want to leave it too long, as he'll be attracting interest if he keeps this up.

Bair is fucking cursed.

Hes like George Williams.

Looks good, does things to create chances/get chances, but it just never comes off for him.

Honestly feel if he needs to drop on loan down to league 1 or 2 and just find a level he can consistently score at then come back with confidence

Why on earth has Phillips not been getting a game? Based on the last game and a half he’s exactly what we’ve been missing in there all season.

Felt we looked much more comfortable with players playing in positions they’re happy in. Carey needs fired into the sun though. Why bring him on when you had Murphy or Wotherspoon who would have come on in that position?

Well fair play to the manager for this one in going for a back four after recent performances.

We looked far better with 4-4-2 in the second half v Livi, but I didn’t think he’d start it against rangers, and thought we’d simply revert to our routine 5-2-3 or 5-3-2.

Could argue over a couple of choices, but overall think it was a good side. I’d love to see a straightforward 4-4-2 with Phillips and MacPherson in centre mid and Clark/May up front.  Drey right mid and Spoony or Murphy on the left.

Agree with mizfit about Bair, get him loaned out to a championship team this month, and let’s see if there’s enough there worth persevering with.  Possibly that was the intention with the interest in Jordan White.

Remi had a very good game.  The blind spot to Carey’s recent form is frustrating though.  He’s a talented player but has been poor for a while. Murphy looked very positive when he came on last week so surely would have been the better choice when Brown went off and Drey dropped back.

Enjoyed Phillips’ last game and a half a lot, though I do feel that whilst he and MacPherson both look like they could be very good for us, they both need to just not get carried and keep doing the  simple things well.

We’re out the cup and should have come to this point in terms of looking at a different formation months ago, but trying to find positives at least we’ve got a few things we can build on.

He has to keep this. I don’t see him moving from it. He’ll know the pressure is on him him job wise.

Don't want to ruin your evening... But... 🫤😬

Convinced Davidson is one of those people who won't admit they're wrong and stick to their guns on it.

It’s only taken 2 and a half years to start with a back 4 again after we struggled away to Livingston not long after Davidson became manager. Much better performance, had balance in midfield and defence looked more comfortable too.

Carey shouldn’t be anywhere near the team. Beggars belief he’s the one brought on ahead of Wotherspoon to play right wing. Spoony hasn’t played there for a few years but he’s clearly the best fit for that role from the options available on the bench.

Couldve just put McLennan on the right and Wotherspoon or Murphy left.

In saying that i thought McLennan played Tavernier well and thats something Wotherspoon has never really managed.

Davidson is good at setting up a side to play the old firm. Aside from a few shockers we’re generally competitive against them and have been unlucky not to pick up more results during his management. At this level and in this league that is a really good managerial trait to have + one you need to win cups and have truly memorable success.

Things like that are part of why I don’t really agree he’s an irredeemably bad manager or whatever. Plus I think at times during his 2 and a half years as manager we’ve looked a really well drilled side, sometimes we press well, when on form we don’t allow many shots on goal at all. These things, which are down to Davidson, contributed to the immense success of his first season and the more limited successes since then. Sadly his flaws gave us the horror show last season, and we aren’t really going anywhere this season.

There’s a road he (and the club) could still go down that could see him become a good manager both for us and for himself in general. More tactical flexibility, less stubbornness, more ambition against poorer sides and someone at the club to say no to his recruitment suggestions. And maybe a more assertive assistant who could say things like “Graham Carey has been off it for months you moron” or “James Brown can’t play on the left” or “Liam Gordon could really use a break and our best player plays his position and is on the bench” would also help.

It would be great if amid all the off field nonsense the football team could become one of the positives rather than yet another negative. There are enough good players there for this to be the case!

tldr: More performances like that and the fans will be off Callum Davidson’s back in no time
