Evolution...

When the UEFA Cup groupstage (for 40 teams) started in 2004-05 no one qualified automatically: there were 80 teams in knockout round preceding it. Out of 32 teams in Champions League groupstage 16 qualified automatically... they were divided across 11 countries - with England, Spain, France, Germany and Greece receiving 2 slots and the rest 1. There was no subdividing of the qualifying rounds into champions and non-champions pathways.

When the Europa League groupstage (for 48 teams) started for 2009-10 only the 10 CL QR4 losers qualified automatically: there were 76 teams in knockout round preceding it. Meanwhile it was now 22 qualified automatically in CL... they were still divided across 11 countries - England, Spain and Italy received 3; France, Germany and Russia received 2; rest received 1. Qualifying round were now subdivided with 5 champions and 5 non-champions slots.

Snapshot for 2014-15 shows the cup winners for the top 7 countries now qualified automatically for EL groupstage; there were now 62 teams in knockout round preceding it. CL same to last.

Nowadays the cup winners for the top 12 countries and league 5th places for England, Spain, France, Germany and Italy together with 10 CL losers qualify automatically for EL groupstage; so there are now just 42 teams in knockout round preceding it: but as 16 of those are CL drop-outs in a champions pathway, that's effectively just 26 teams. Incredibly in CL groupstage no fewer than 26 qualify automatically... they are divided across 10 countries - with England, Spain, Italy and Germany  receiving 4 each; France and Russia 2; the rest 1. There are now just 4 spaces for champions pathway and 2 for non-champions.

So basically CL automatic slots have gone from 16/32 to 22/32 and now 26/32: and yet the number of countries getting a slot has gone fallen from 11 to 10, and a 'big 5' receiving 10 slots has become a 'big 3' receiving 9 slots and finally a 'big 4' receiving 16 slots. EL has got totally transformed - from an entirely open tournament into something with 17 automatic qualifiers & 18 CL drop-outs and just 13 of its own entrants.

Great post HJ.

To go further back, when Scotland were a top 5 country and had two clubs in the top 10 of the ranking, the only difference it made was whether you got one, two or three UEFA Cup places, and whether you started in the preliminary or first round.

In those days there was hardly any prize money, you made your cash by selling TV, sponsorship, hospitality and tickets for your home games.

Now, you make you cash from continent-wide sponsors and TV rights holders who make their money from TV subscribers and national sponsors. The sponsors and TV rights holders from the biggest, richest countries only want to see the teams from their own countries, and the big boys of Barca, Real, Bayern, Juve, Man Utd with maybe a couple of others. Dundee Utd in a Champions League semi final against Roma? That's not going to sell any tyres in Germany, is it.

Folk watching European football at home on the telly are the only people who matter now.

Red Star Belgrade qualifying for the UCL group stage and getting the bonus points has put a bit of a daylight between Serbia in 19th and the chasing pack (the gap is equivalent to five extra group stage wins). Best we can hope for this season would be catching Belarus in 20th if we have two teams in the UEL groups.

Why even pretend they're different competitions? It's making the Europa League even more of a joke. If Fenerbahçe aren't good enough to beat a Rangers or Molde over two legs then they don't deserve group stage football (also they're a horrid club).
Or should we follow UEFA's lead and add Hamilton, Dundee, Killie et al to the Challenge Cup draw?

The sad thing is it's not  that different these teams get parachuted into the Europa group stages and play their U21's. Making it even more of an insult.

Just doing our bit, no need to pile lots of praise on us....

You're making up for last season at least ;)

Draw or win for Celtic later and we'll move above Poland to 21st, could be just one group stage win behind Belarus who will only have one UEL team.

There is a strange lack of positivity and congratulations towards sevco on this forum

I have to admit they have done fantastically well to get to the group stages, and it's great to see two Scottish teams in there. I'd have preferred that to be Aberdeen and Hibs, to redress the financial imbalance in Scottish football, but I'll be happy to see the ugly sisters get some more coefficient points. The way things are going, I suspect The Rangers will get more than Celtic.

Very few teams, if any, play their youth or reserve players in the Europa League now that it has a Champions League spot available. Even the likes of Arsenal last season sent out strong line-ups throughout the tournament.

Looks like we've already equalled last season's coefficient. It's looking like it'll be a good opportunity to gain some ground. As I've said before, there's no reason why we can't overtake Belarus and finish 20th. Any higher than that may be a struggle this season, but certainly not impossible.

Update after this week's games. Serbia's UCL qualification moves them 4 wins clear in the race for 19th, although they now only have one team - in the group of death with PSG/Napoli/Liverpool. Norway got a second team in the UEL group stage at the expense of Israel. Will be a very interesting draw tomorrow, with Norway, Cyprus (18th), and Czech Republic (17th) all in pot 4.

19 eq Serbia         5.250 21.500 +1.125 1 UCL
20 eq Belarus         3.000 19.875                  1 UEL
21 up Scotland         4.000 19.375 +0.375 2 UEL
22 dn Poland         2.250 19.250                  0
23 eq Sweden         2.375 19.150 +0.250 1 UEL
24 eq Norway         4.125 18.950 +0.500 2 UEL
25 eq Israel         2.625 18.625 +0.250 0
