Brexit slowly becoming a Farce.

John Lambies Doos

Things are getting interesting, as the UK Government begins to feel the pressure on several fronts; the stated position of the EU, a nascent Parliamentary blockade of No Deal and now industry and commerce turning the screw on a daily basis.

Let's see how long it takes for Johnson's Brexit to evaporate in the face of cold, hard reality.

The action will be enforcement (upholding) the rules on Ireland.

That hole you're digging is getting mighty deep....

The UK government has already published proposals to keep the Irish border open in the event of a no-deal.  Any hard border that appears in Ireland will be the result of Irish/EU action.  The issue is that Ireland will not have the flexibility to decide itself as it will be required to do whatever the EU ask to protect the Single Market.  Any straw clutching or hole digging will be on the Irish side.

Really? Can you outline these "proposals" which would somehow allow an open Irish border without disrupting the integrity of the European Union?

They'll certainly be hole digging. Those northern irelanders will have to escape the fascist, insular British state somehow.

Can you provide a link to these published proposals? Genuine question.
Is this what was spoken about - having the border in the Irish Sea or technology based on the south / north border?

The Irish sea was the best plan but the DUP and hard line Tories wouldn't accept it as it was seen as a creeping reunification. Plus it would also have meant NI getting preferential treatment in the (don't laugh) Union of Equals.

The sooner the Romanians see how easy it is get around the end of free movement by taking a bus from Dublin to Larne and jumping on the ferry, the sooner a border on the Irish Sea will be recognised, as if it wasn't already. Maybe the Irish will do these Calais boys a favour and let them through too.

Surely Romanians will have visa waivers?

The issue is the right to work and claim benefits.

Pretty sure that the uk government just said we don’t need a hard border because of technology.

The EU said there is no suitable technology and we said there will be.

I think the EU will get back to us once they’ve stopped laughing.

The EU have already said we'll need visas, I'm sure there will reciprocal arrangements for Romanians. In other news Interrail passes will no longer be recognised in the UK. Welcome to freedom!

They have said we will have visa exemption but will have to apply online for travel authorisation when it starts in 2021. Presumably we will reciprocate in kind.

Which means "Having access to London's financial markets" becomes far less important and not much of a negotiating tool. Though you didn't promote that particular point as being something the UK had in it's armoury...

I did not

I think you will find that this is exactly what the EU have said may be implemented in the event of a no deal.  They laughing at themselves?

You're deluding yourself. There are no workable proposals.
