Scotland Centre Backs

Recommended Posts

Mulgrew hasn't played since before Christmas. Tony Mowbray pretty much confirmed he's no future at Blackburn either.  Mowbray said, “He’s been an amazing servant to this club. Who knows, if we have a defensive crisis he could come back in.” - So he's unlikely to play again this season.

He might not be quite Christophe Berra levels of done, but I certainly wouldn't be rushing to get him in the squad either.

Pretty much what Ludo said. Was loaned to Wigan in first half of the season and cut it short in January as he wanted to fight for his place at Blackburn. Will have a fair job on his hands though as the current 2 centre backs have been superb together and he's not even making the bench either.

Edit to add, I dont really mind whether he's in the Scotland squad or not, just providing a clearer update on his current situation.

Hanley is by far our best centre back

While I wouldn’t go this far, his first dozen caps or so were fairly competent. He didn’t look completely lost against Liverpool last night either. I’d. Have no problem starting him against Israel, although he and McKenna might be the slowest pairing in history.

The fact we’re even considering calling up Charlie fucking Mulgrew and that he has some 40+ caps to his name just shows how desperate we currently are in that position and how weak we’ve been in that department for the past few years.

Mulgrew is still the one of the only centre backs we have who can use the ball to any degree. Cooper has come on a lot in that regard under Bielsa but he doesn't have the range of passing Mulgrew does. We can't be going with two big lumps like McKenna and Gallagher next to each other because they will be given time on the ball and forced to try and play out.

I'd go with Cooper next to Hanley personally. Of the SPFL centre backs I think Findlay should be the first pick but that looks unlikely.

One of them has been binned off to the Scottish Championship for being completely done, while the other has still been playing reasonably well (when fit) in the English Championship. "Nuff said"

Mulgrew has barely play at all for months and has been told he can leave his current club, who are one of the worst teams in the Championship.  No chance he should be in a Scotland squad again, he's utterly done.

He's not even really a CB, his actual defending is fairly honking and always has been.  Yes he can spray fifty yard passes all day but so could Charlie Adam and he won't be in the squad either.

Added to all of the above, remember that it was Mulgrew who was axed from the squad after the Russia thumping - Steve Clarke clearly realised he was a weak link at CB. IIRC he said he would stop selecting players who were letting him down and Mulgrew was one of the highest profile absentees from the next squad.

Two dead rubbers where he clearly just wanted to rotate a few defenders

Eh? The last thing SC has wanted to do is 'rotate defenders'. The bane of his time in charge has been the inability to field a consistent back 2. That Mulgrew was axed, even in light of that, speaks volumes.
