Kieran Tierney

He had a bad game tonight, yes. He’ll be in the team of the season though, as he’s been the best left back in the league this year. Tierney has played one season in the PL so far, and spent a fair bit of it injured, so your ‘one good season’ comment sounds a bit ridiculous. ‘Streets ahead of both’ 4A0C309C-6B26-4029-BF71-BB446AEBBF05.png.93bd6401839417f33d8430f372b40067.pngsuch a stupid comment. He’s been better than Robertson this season but Robertson has achieved far more in the game than Tierney has. Rolls Royce of a player is also a horrific turn of phrase.

Two seasons. And Tierney has been tremendous every season of his career. Shaw has one good season. Tierney's clearly the superior player, Shaw has shipped three goals in his last two games.

A bit more playacting from Tierney there. Cracking player but I wish he’d cut that out unless it clearly benefits the national team.

Ftfy.

But aye, I'm not a fan of this either.

I think there's two sides to this. Yes, on the face of it it looks daft when he's clearly got the ability to play at a higher level than Arsenal, but then, 18 months to two seasons in the EPL of proving he's not just an injury-prone lightweight, he'd still be young enough to be looking at back-to-back enormous contracts elsewhere, and he's got enough time remaining on his deal that Arsenal will get a huge fee for him. Being under contract won't put the super-clubs off. If they want him badly enough they'll pay.

Why are folk talking like a 5 year contract means hes staying at Arsenal for 5 years?

Fairly unlikely he will move on in the short term at least. Purely because it would take a ridiculous bid from Arsenal to sell him, and there’s not many clubs who’d be willing to pay that money for a defender.
Wouldn’t surprise me if he’s at Arsenal till his 30’s then comes back to finish up at Celtic.

Because many football fans seem to have incredibly short, despite a lifetime of watching football and seeing these types of things happen over and over again. It's like when a club get pumped one week and play a big team the next week, folk are always giving it "this could be a cricket score" and are absolutely astonished when in fact the team get a result and/or play well.

It’s a terrific deal for him. 5 years on probably excellent money, especially when he’s had quite a few injury issues now is a nice secure payday.

Arsenal might not be as good as they were but they are hardly a diddy team and there’s nothing to stop him moving to a bigger club who, if they want a player, will pay for them.

It guarantees he's at Arsenal for a minimum of two more years, more likely at least three. Nobody could afford to buy him now, and wouldn't pay what it would cost even if they could. He had an opportunity to work his ticket and be out of there at the latest next summer, that's gone now. Its very silly.

No they won't pay, when you have 4 years on your deal Arsenal could ask 100 million. Nobody is paying that.

I expect Arsenal to be much better this year anyway, but with his injury record having security isn't the worst thing. There will probably be a release clause in it too, as there tends to be when the player holds the cards in a negotiation.

What like Harry Maguire? Van Dijk? Or Jadon Sancho? Jack Grealish? Big teams will pay if they want them enough.

No they won't, you just don't understand. Once you've signed a 5 year deal nobody is buying you for minimum two years, more likely three as it would cost too much.

He doesn't have a bad injury record, he played 250 games before he was 24 and managed 45 games this season. He doesn't need 'security' he's a top player who would be in high demand. As for a release clause these are set prohibitively high, there won't be one that is in any way realistic.

Signing this deal guarantees he's an Arsenal player for a minimum of two more years realistically much more likely three. And they're out of Europe for the first time in 25 years. Its a stupid decision, he should have been trying to get right to the top as he's capable and that isn't Arsenal.

He’s 24 and there’s something to be said about being comfortable and happy where you are. 5 years takes him to 29, but realistically he could get out at 27-28, at which point he’s only entering the heights of his career.

Not sure we should be second guessing his commitment to remain at Arsenal, and playing under a manager he believes in.
