Having watched Emily Thornberry on Sophy Ridge this morning - straight after she had interviewed Raab, who just waffled without answering a single question.

Thornberry was not afraid to speak her mind on the assassination of  Suleimani and really came across like a breath of fresh air. I've long felt that Starmer should be the next leader, but I certainly wouldn't mind if Thornberry got the job.

Before the 2019 election, I always thought it would be a two horse race between Starmer and Thornberry for whoever would be the next Labour leader.

They both speak quite honestly IMO (that may change over the coming weeks when they start to do Hustings and interviews). Thornberry always faired well when she deputised for Corbyn at PMQ’d and asked questions that Corbyn didn’t necessarily ask.

Checked out the latest odds:

Sir Keir Starmer 4/5
Rebecca Long-Bailey 4/1
Lisa Nandy - 10/1
Jess Phillips - 12/1
Clive Lewis - 33/1
Emily Thornberry - 50/1

Can't believe Rebecca Long-face is 4/1

Emily might be worth a £1 at 50/1

I have this horrible vision of the year 2026 and a grinning Prime Minister Keir Starmer standing alongside US President Donald Trump Junior trying to justify the invasion of *.

* complete as appropriate.

I think Starmer is likely the best placed of the declared candidates to seriously challenge the Tories at a general election, but I'm not convinced that he is a particularly good communicator. I quite like Nandy and some of the stuff she says, but I think it might be a bit too soon for her and I can't see her getting the breadth of support required to seriously challenge Long-Bailey or Starmer. It reflects badly on the Labour Right that Phillips is their chosen candidate.

Whoever gets the job is basically immaterial as given that the tories have such a big overall majority any opposition will be ineffective.

Surely that much is obvious.

So it is highly likely that at this point the least likely and least possibly successful candidate will be thrown to the dogs as leader/fodder thereby saving their stronger personalities until a much later date.

Although the current list of candidates are a total mess, Labour need to get the best leader possible after the last 4 disasters they’ve had. There have been a few times during Tory reign that people have gone against them, but the Labour leaders have never been strong enough to turn the tide. If Brexit turns out to be a mess, a strong leader is needed to take on Boris.

I like RLB. To answer the title of the thread, there is no point in Labour unless they provide a Socialist alternative.

At the moment, I think I'll be voting for her but hoping she isn't against including people from all wings of the party in her Shadow Cabinet. I'm also hoping she can avoid the same baggage that accompanied Corbyn. He never really shook off that Britain-hating, IRA lover tag. Whether it was fair or not is irrelevant.

I honestly very much doubt RLB will get the chance to avoid that baggage. She is the clear choice of Corbyn/McDonnell and will be tainted by that before she even begins.

I’ve nothing against her personally but for me, a genuinely stupid move if Labour end up with her as leader.

The only saving grace for Labour in Scotland is if they disassociate themselves completely from the London/Westminster party and create a wholly separate Scottish party steeped in the original Hardie/Maxwell/McDonald working class principles, only then will they be taken seriously.

Presently they are mostly viewed in Scotland as an english political party.

RLB will probably fit the bill for my take earlier, I can foresee her squeaky Mrs Merton voice will carry much authority and strike terror into Boris Johnson.
