I think there is pretty good evidence already that the Kent variant was more transmissable but not that it was more deadly. Obviously this paper isn't peer reviewed yet so might be contradicted. As you say the variant doesn't appear to be vaccin resistant, which is very good news.

No. Because then the cause of death wouldn't be Covid. 4 minutes ago, madwullie said: Is it that the strain (pre-print conscious) is more lethal, or the fact that it is more transmissible leads to more deaths? I tried reading it but it's just words I do recognise all joined together in a senseless fashion. It's a retrospective cohort study. They have attempted to match each novel variant case with similar non-variant cases (age, gender, co-morbidities, etc). It says you have about a 60% higher chance of dying if you have the Kent variant. It can't tell us why this is the case because of the study design. 3 minutes ago, Ron Aldo said: Regardless, we know the vaccines can kick it's wee Kent c**t in so I'm not really bothered by this. Yeah, the data was collected between October and January and followed up into last month. It could still be the case that the Kent variant has higher mortality, but as long as the vaccine is effective in reducing total mortality, it is likely not clinically relevant.
ayrmad
We'll surely find out in 4 or 5 weeks time how much impact 1st and 2nd vaccines have on transmission rates, hospital/ICU admissions and deaths after the weekends inadvertent wee case study opportunity. Might be worth a few extra weeks just to see what answers it throws up. -

Based on this CFR we'd be looking at 4,000 deaths per 1m cases next winter, a figure which I imagine fits well within the "similar risk level as flu" chat. With a highly vaccinated population by then, I don't think we'd get anywhere near 1m cases either, even with no restrictions whatsoever. Hopefully this is used to encourage vaccine uptake rather than delay any easing of restrictions.

Despite the sense of there being light at the end of the tunnel, she says there should be no return to the old normal. New hygiene measures can have a wider impact she insists and would like to see the public continue with mask wearing on public transport “Every year we have influenza outbreaks and people in hospital with flu, and we have other respiratory tract infections,” she says. “We could reduce the impact of flu quite a lot.” Into the bin she goes. Another zealot.

D.V.T.
With the Rangers celebrations it is galling the lack of condemnation from fans, or the club for the George Square celebrations. Yet also the number of people shouting “SECOND SPIKE”, “WE’LL BE IN LOCKDOWN FOREVER” when there was no second spike from the Liverpool or Leeds celebrations last year too is arguably even more irritating.
