Thereisalight..
Would we be happy to let the economy go to the wall, lose so many small businesses from the high street, potentially lower league Scottish clubs, lose our civil liberties all for the sake of less than 40 deaths a day? pandarilla
Portraying frontline essential workers as "heroes" fighting a valiant struggle is directly linked to this right wing imperial pish especially when they're much more at risk because of your conscious ideological decisions that have made their work less safe.I'm sorry but this is absolutely bollocks. The nhs is a fantastic organisation, and a inherently left wing one. Whether or not they'd been let down by their government (which i agree they have) - they'd still be giving everything they've got.Folk linking the applause to support for the government policies are spectacularly missing the point. It is a perfectly reasonable position to take part in the applause and also criticise the government's policies. -
Ludo*1
The weekly applause still has to be one of the most embarrassing things going.

Spike Milligan in his War Memoirs recalled getting very pissed on VE night and "I was woken up in the middle of the night. Some b*****d was trying to fart through the keyhole" If the lockdown wasn't in place this street party shite could get in the sea. Surely the way to celebrate VE day is in the original 1945 way- getting pished and trying to shag a nurse/WREN/ATS/land girl

It's quite an easy choice between them and a shop that sells phone cases or vape refills.

The issue comes from the deaths that would come from the economy coming crashing down ie, suicides. But the economy itself taken as an individual concept? Not a chance. -

Asking for a friend Of course not. Any sane person would agree. The reality is, if this thing had never gone above being responsible for 20 deaths per day (adjusted relative to normal expected daily death rate %age globally) we'd have heard little about it, never mind shut down the economy. It stands to reason that if we can get it back to around 20 and keep it there, that there is no logical reason to keep the economy closed. Must be plenty of insane people on here then, as their family/friends may be amongst that 20. Better keep the masses “locked down” and have thousands of people out of work until there’s 0 deaths per day

Better keep the masses “locked down” and have thousands of people out of work until there’s 0 deaths per day Almost 12,000 people died of Hong Kong Flu (H3N2) in the UK in the winter of 2016/17 H3N2 was the virus responsible for the 1969 pandemic, killing 80,000 in the UK, and is a virus which we have a vaccine for. We didn't lock down in 1969, and we didn't impose restrictions for the next 47 years either. A worrying number of people seem to expect or welcome restrictions until this thing hits zero deaths. The reality is that likely isn't going to happen. At least anytime soon. We need to find and accept a way to move on in life which doesn't involve staying 2m away from everyone, and we need to find it relatively quickly. If that is masks in public for a while then fine.
