Seems like there are ten conferences, why don't they just have the winners of the conferences and runners-up from the six highest rated conferences go into a 16-team playoff? I've never understood why they need to be letting journalists decide who are the best teams when they have actual tables and conference championship matches.

The horse has well and truly bolted on anything like that. Where once there were 10 regionally decent Conferences with some independents. That did have a Big 5 / Bottom 5 idea in term of quality. Chasing increasing media rights values has led to lots of jockeying for position.

Think this map might be the best illustration of what's happening with the Power 5 Conferences next year.

So if you are from a rubbish conference, it's completely impossible to make the playoffs even if you win every game 70-0?

The playoff is changing to a 12 team format. The way that was intended to be was the 6 highest ranked Conference champions and 6 highest ranked teams outwith that.

So there would be at least the one champion from outside the Power 5.

After realignment this format might be tweaked.

There isn't 6 good conferences. Journalists don't pick the playoff rankings.

FSU were very unlucky not to make the cut for the playoffs, but they are getting handed their arse in the orange bowl with Georgia 35-3 ahead coming up to half time. Admittedly they have a lot of opt outs and are vastly understrength from what they were during the season.

Defense has showed up today, nearly broken down in that last drive but forced the FG from Bama. The offense is starting to click and hopefully are set for a big 2nd half. Special teams though... jeezy peeps, get it together, making it so much easier for Alabama to stay in the game. Had a proper 'trouble with the snap' moment on the PA attempt.
