TxRover
Now confirmed Russia had 3 A-50U’s in service, and that’s one splashed now. Cost of the airframe was $330 million, with about another $500 million spent to upgrade to the U configuration. For some insane reason, the Russians were operating the Mainstay within the range of a Patriot system in southeast Ukraine.
ICTChris
Some interesting articles today - a theory on how the Ukrainians shot down the A-50, with some details about the technology involved. https://xxtomcooperxx.substack.com/p/ukraine-war-16-january-2024-scratch?r=7jgcu&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email I had forgotten that Wagner shot down an Il-22 during their rebellion! Whoops. An article about the re-opening of the Black Sea to Ukrainian grain traffic, which has now reached pre-war levels and is being insured. https://www.epravda.com.ua/rus/news/2024/01/17/708855/ A further, earlier, article from Ukrainian Pravda details the operations that enabled this - https://www.pravda.com.ua/articles/2024/01/1/7435326/ Canadian journalist Neil Hauer, who has reported from the front lines of the conflict, wrote about the narratives of the war, the swinging between doomerism and boosterism that has characterised war takes - https://warontherocks.com/2024/01/ukraines-war-of-narratives/?utm_content=buffer1c7f8&utm_medium=social&utm_source=linkedin.com&utm_campaign=buffer

They’re obviously both using the same blogger, but it does track with several other sources. Honestly though, given recent reports like the RNC paying people at the Washington Times, I might trust them more than U.S. media.
Ray Patterson
Interesting interview that Channel 4 had with Zelenskyy this evening. I think he knows how important it is to make significant ground in the next 12 months, before Trump or a MAGA Republican-controlled Congress comes in.
Ginaro
These NSFL drone videos are scary and just something you wouldn't be considering when thinking about war like 10+ years ago. https://twitter.com/Teoyaomiquu/status/1748005411943235997

It's important not to underestimate the willingness of the Democrats to leave Ukraine dangling to a certain extent if it helps Biden win by making the Republicans look bad to moderate swing voters. Lend lease is now off their agenda when it could have been the answer to the current impasse.

Bairnardo
What is the rationale behind the ever increasing stories about NATO getting into a massive European ground war with Russia in which we will all be called up, when Russia have spent 2 years and counting getting their arsed wiped whilst making zero headway in East Ukraine?

Initially the Ukrainians said that the flight was carrying S-300 missiles but the Russians have very quickly insisted that the transit was carrying Ukrainian POWs. Ukraine says they didn’t receive any information advising of the transit to be used for the prisoners, which is the usual for the prisoner swaps.
