Scottish Cup 2022/23

Recommended Posts

The road to Hampden started at a sunny and hot Innerleithen. Victoria Park must be one of Scotland's most picturesque grounds, surrounded by the Border hills as it is. I can also report that the pre-match pint I had in the Traquair Arms was excellent.

Dunbar were the better team but Vale weren't irredeemably awful and had a couple of chances. The visitors went ahead from the spot after a clear cut penalty award (no VAR needed here) but there was to be no more scoring until late on when the Vale keeper was caught in no man's land far from his box and a 20 yard chip actually went in for once (most of these efforts I see sailing over the bar or wide). The large Dunbar travelling support were even given some fun when manager Kevin Haynes did some keepie up on the touchline.

A home cup tie would get Dunbar buzzing but I'd like an away tie to somewhere interesting.

Newton Stewart were a couple short today, and should have wrapped it up earlier. Very surprised, but well deserved.

What utter nonsense 🤣 both teams very poor. Replay was probably a fair result. Preston missing 7 players vast majority of them starters including there 2 talismen in Jamie Devlin suspended for getting sent off wi Dunbar and Paul Currie for the talbot sending off was a leveller. Credit to Newton Stewart for taking there chance at the end. If it was a replay a wouldve fancied Preston to go down there and win comfortably with there men back but hey ho thats football

R1 draw Monday afternoon, due September 17th:

Lowland League (16)
Berwick Rangers, Bo'ness United, Caledonian Braves, Civil Service Strollers, Cowdenbeath, Cumbernauld Colts, Dalbeattie Star, East Kilbride, East Stirlingshire, Edinburgh University, Gala Fairydean Rovers, Gretna 2008, OG Broomhill, Spartans, Tranent, University of Stirling

Highland League (18)
Banks o'Dee, Brechin City, Brora Rangers, Buckie Thistle, Clachnacuddin, Deveronvale, Formartine United, Forres Mechanics, Fraserburgh, Huntly, Inverurie Loco Works, Keith, Lossiemouth, Nairn County, Rothes, Strathspey Thistle, Turriff United, Wick Academy

East of Scotland League (13)
(Premier Division)     Broxburn Athletic, Dundonald Bluebell, Jeanfield Swifts, Linlithgow Rose, Lothian Thistle HV, Musselburgh Athletic, Sauchie, Tynecastle
(First Division)     Camelon, Dunbar United, Dunipace, Newtongrange Star
(Second Division)     Syngenta

West of Scotland League (9)
(Premier Division)     Auchinleck Talbot, Clydebank, Cumnock, Darvel, Pollok
(First Division)     Benburb, Drumchapel United
(Second Division)     Glasgow University
(tbc)      Kilwinning Rangers/Rutherglen Glencairn

South of Scotland League (1)
Newton Stewart

Midland League (1)
Lochee United

(tbc) (2)
Hawick Royal Albert/Carnoustie Panmure
Hill of Beath Hawthorn/Irvine Meadow

If you assume Carnoustie and Kilwinning do business in their replays... that said Carnoustie despite being Midland League champion couldn't beat Hawick at home yesterday!... then most sides would fancy Newton Stewart, Glasgow Uni, Drumchapel or Dunipace (although the scale of their victory yesterday was formidable). Thereafter many of the easiest ties would probably be against lower-ranking Highland and Lowland teams.

Beyond that a lot of quality has come through in the shape of 8x East Premier and 5x West Premier outfits plus Lochee, as well as 3x East and 1x West teams relegated into their First Divisions for this campaign. Syngenta will also considered pretty handy although they've had rather limited to exposure to tier 5 & 6 opposition since entering the league system.

Ties due Saturday 17th September, although 1 will likely go Friday 16th for live TV coverage. Home ties would probably also go to Friday at Glasgow Uni or Syngenta (plus OG Broomhill, LTHV and Drumchapel if Cumbernauld Colts, Spartans and Clydebank respectively were also drawn at home), or to Sunday 18th for Stirling Uni. Clubs are now just 2 wins from potentially facing the likes of Dundee, Partick, Falkirk, Dunfermline, etc. etc.

When did the SFA licensing rule become a thing? ,I know it’s been around for a few years. I remember Pollok playing in the cup before, not to mention Bathgate Thistle who have never been licensed.

2007-08 the Scottish Cup opened up to all SFA members, the winners of the Highland, EoS, and South senior leagues if not already members and the 3 Junior Superleagues and Junior Cup winner.

SFA licencing came in around 2011 I think. Following the SFA AGM that took on some of the McLeish report recommendations. It was a way to improve standards within the SFA membership and the beginnings of forming a pyramid.
