There was already a large increase in duty on spirits in August this year.

Next you'll be moaning about the NI reduction not really being 2% because of the 1.25% NHS levy brought in previously.

And with good reason. Folk have short memories so will only see the 2%. Smoke and mirrors.

Ni cuts quite significant.

Money would have been better spent on services but that was never happening. As a Tory option, NI cuts to the main rate are the most progessive and probably best for the multiplier.

Absolute piss take claiming credit for halving inflation. At least they credited the BoE for their help.

Freezing duty on all alcohol.

You'll be voting Tory next year? 😉

I realise you are joking, but anyone who needs to base their vote on desperate pork-barrel politics from a Government which has over 13 years crippled the economy and slashed the social fabric of the UK really needs to see a doctor.

If they can get an appointment.

Very much so, especially with the freezing of the PA and the band rates. Overall, it's still a rise.

I don't actually blame them for that policy as it was an easy way to save money, but the spin that he'll put out about cutting taxes is deception.

What bribes can Jeremy c**t conjure up in a futile attempt to improve their electoral hopes for next year?

Inheritance tax is the one that's been widely touted but I can't see that being a massive vote winner despite The Telegraph and The Express banging on about the 'death' tax being the most hated. National Insurance is also being rumoured to change.

Doing something about the tax thresholds that have been frozen and dragged more and more people into the higher tax bands might make some people better off but it's not a sexy policy because most folk don't understand how it affects them. Changing the rates is easier to understand but they seem to be more likely to fiddle with national insurance.

Most importantly, will it affect the way you intend to vote next year?  Daft question for most on here. 😄

You get taxed in a number of ways on money you earn, you get taxed on money you save, you get taxed on money you spend as well as on assets you may have (house, car etc). You then get taxed on money you have when you are dead.  f**k that !  I'm determined not ever to die.

Guess what?  Humza and Harvie want to extract even more  :jerry

All these posts and virtually no mention of possibly the biggest announcement in the statement ie the the forecasts for growth and inflation have both been revised....in the wrong direction  !!! A classic diversion headline to bury the real news with growth forecasts revised downwards (despite all the trumpeting that they have "turned the economy round") and inflation now expected to stay above their target 2% for longer (again in spite of the trumpeting about it this week). Of course the media are helping in this massive smoke and mirrors operation.

Both Sky and BBC have called out the growth forecasts.  Wasn’t really paying attention to the news at 6 so no idea if BBC mentioned the inflation forecasts but Sam Coates on Sky called out the inflation forecasts as well in his piece straight after the statement.

No idea what media source you’re using.

ETA both these topics just mentioned on reporting Scotland.

You don't get taxed on money you have when you're dead. You don't have any money when you're dead, because you're dead.

You get taxed when someone dies and you have the pure luck of them leaving you literally the most unearned money any human being ever receives. You do more to earn money when you win the lottery.

Inheritance tax is the fairest tax ever created.

It's like shops, where they jack up prices a month or so before a sale, then cut the prices at the sale and say you're saving loads.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/nov/22/the-guardian-view-on-the-tories-pro-rich-tax-giveaway-to-be-paid-for-by-bankrupting-the-state

"Jeremy Hunt’s autumn statement is an institutionally fatal confrontation between economic libertarianism and reality. Under his self-imposed rules, the government’s programme of the biggest tax cuts since 1988 is to be paid for by future state shrinking so dramatic that it threatens to “bankrupt” essential public services. The speech was dressed up in true-blue clothing, with talk of cutting benefits of the workshy and a big share sell-off. But underneath the garb was an ossifying ruling party desperate to forestall public disillusionment with policies that have become a recipe for disaster."

I'm not convinced any Central Bank helped inflation anywhere. Inflation was only ever going to fall when energy costs fell (and we got beyond April 2023), and interest rate rises did not drive that.

Mid-to-long term the combination of unnecessary interest rate rises and freezing of PA and HRT for an additional 2 years over what was previously stated are going to have a much bigger impact on people's income and living standards than any tiny reduction in NI contributions will.

Freezing the Personal Allowance and Higher Rate Thresholds until 2028 is a kick in the stones.

They won't have changed since 2021 by then.

Here we have the paradox.

I assume that like most people you want functioning public services?

Like most people you’re not impressed with the amount of tax you pay?

People think that more tax is a good thing… but only for people that earn/have more than them.  When NI was increased to raise money for the NHS there was an outcry which sums it up perfectly.  Regressive, disproportionally impacts the less well off etc.

Unfortunately wailing “tax the rich” won’t cut it.  If it was that easy then countries would do it as there is likely enough money sloshing about to fund our services but the government can’t get their hands on it.

I don’t pretend to have the answers but if we want functioning services the money has to come from somewhere.
