Push the boat out and get Barack Obama.

They'd sink him trying to cross the channel...

I don't know how relevant Swinney's stint as leader really is.  It ended 20 years ago, and the SNP were a very different beast in those days - in opposition, much smaller membership, never been in government.

Mairi McAllan would be my choice and I'm fairly sure she will lead one day.  As someone previously mentioned though, she's going on maternity leave so not ideal timing.

What's she done to be anywhere near the top of the SNP let alone lead a country?

I thought she handled the reset of the A9 dualling plans very well, calmed down and convinced a load of people who were raging about the lack of progress, not an easy thing to do.

As Deputy when he had to stand in for the FM he was competent in handling FM questions and good at put downs.

My scepticism stems from her being in the SNP from an early age and having very little life experience outside of politics. All very similar to the departing First Minister and even more so his predecessor (as she was also in law, slightly less briefly).

Probably rules out about 80% of politicians of all stripes these days then.

Give it to Neil Warnock until the end of the season,  he's always wanted to manage in Scotland and you can't really count his stint in Aberdeen as they are a complete binfire! Oh wait.....

Bernie Sanders would be a class appointment now that his time as a top level talent in the US is pretty much over.

I do think that it's just gonna be a placeholder, Sturgeon is going to distance herself from her husband, come out of the whole mess clean as a whistle and drive us all in a brand new, unused campervan to independence once she's had a good wee rest.
