Middle class Scottish things

I think the whole premise of this thread highlights why the UK, Scotland is fucked. Too much focus on where people came from rather than what they are as people.

Scotland and the UK have been fucked by too much class consciousness is an... interesting take on the last 50 years.

I'd ask for evidence but it's patently obvious that you're just raging about not being in the 'correct' category.

How are we different from other countries? Why are we different from other countries?

1) In the US (and quite possibly similar, Anglophone ex-colonies) the class myth involves everyone being middle class. Look at the Presidential campaign right now (for 2 minutes at least, because it's dreadful): any American politician is viewed as a card-carrying Communist for mentioning the working or labouring class renting an apartment as a distinct interest group to a two income family with the big detached house in the suburbs.

England as a whole is more comfortable in expressing class differences, though the same working class charade no doubt applies to some degree in the north of that country. The reason for that difference is found below.

2) The upper and middle classes of Scotland were Anglicising in terms of their language, accent, political views and cultural preferences between the Act of Union and at least the 1960s. The Scottish middle and upper classes ran the Empire and it was a Scot (Lord Reith) who pushed received pronunciation in the BBC.

As cultural nationalism developed in Scotland during the 20th century it therefore looked far more to the working class as the main source of Scottish identity compared to comparable intellectual groups in European nations. Which is why Scotland's 'authentic' culture as represented by its media and art is almost exclusively urban not rural, and dominated by the huge weight of labour culture and language from Greater Glasgow (with a lesser contribution from Edinburgh too).

I suspect a similar mechanism operates within Welsh culture and identity but they're not significant enough to care about.

Fair points. Thinking through the various fields of art in the 20th century in Scotland there's a lot more success (nationally and beyond) from less affluent backgrounds. Maybe music's a bit less skewed since effete shite like Roddy Frame and Belle & Sebastian remain bafflingly popular. Literature has certainly been most successful from the poorest backgrounds.

I suppose the notion of an identity defined by trying to appear as non-English as possible is something to consider. Maybe Limmy is on to something with his Glasgow Uni Accent characters.

Clearly a lot of smart, successful people on this forum and thread who make a good living and have great lives. But good forbid that you admit that you have improved yourself

...or we might be having a bit of laugh on social media. You decide

Our cats over the years have been two tortoiseshells, a black and white Smudger type and a ginger tom.

Common or garden Moggies basically.

Owning a pedigree cat and not letting it out the house in case it fights the fox or other cats is a middle class thing

I had a maine coon (spelling?) for a while. He was a rescue cat, old, crabbit and hard as nails. The big, daft fucker was always outside massacring the local wildlife. The foxes didn't have a chance

So the tottie belt is obviously the west starting from Bishopbriggs in the north and, maybe Girvan(?) in the south. Not sure where it starts in the East.

Just a rough outline.

Obviously everyone, even the funcy folk, say tatties up here.
