I'd suggest you go for a hardtail which has front suspension and offers a wee bit more comfort on some of the bumpier tracks

I know a few are a wee bit above your budget but they're well worth it

Personally, I'd go for either the Fuji from Chain Reaction or  the Giant from Tredz

Just make sure you order the right frame size for your height

Outside on my bike on Saturday morning for the first time since September. Only 30km or so but went up the hills on some of the forest tracks so gave my legs a fair work out. Hoping the weather stays decent from here on and I can get out most weekends for the next 5 or 6 months.

Loch Ness Etape today for my first Road cycling event of any sort. The weather turned out better than expected though I was absolutely seething when the wind changed direction giving me approx 50 miles of headwind [emoji38]

I was hoping for 4.5 hours and hit almost exactly that, averaging 14.6 mph.

A couple of really bad crashes at the 20 mile mark though, hopefully both OK.

It's a great event and I'm absolutely gutted I've missed it this year as I knew I was going to be stuck in Oxford this month when the website for places opened. Maybe I'll be able to do it next year but I think I'll have a go at PoppyScotland though.

I really enjoyed it. First time on a new bike though, and the first time I've cycled since last September. Apparently by the time the back of the pack got past Drum there were accidents all over the place.
The 2 you're talking about looked awful. I'm not into the road cycling thing by in large, certainly not in groups of more than 2, it's terrifying the speed that some people go at while 3 inches from the person in front/to the side.

I'm not telling you my time though :-D I'm happy enough with it but I was a bit slower than you.

The first one was speaking to the paramedic when we passed, the second one looked bad, blood all over the road. Probably a wheel clip, it was a pretty fast descent section

Good to hear you guys enjoyed the ELN. I'm doing the Etape Caledonia in a few weeks - any one else here doing it?

Also, got my velodrome accreditation today at the 4th session. Won 2 out of 3 races as well. 8)

I shat out of the Etape today. I dislocated a finger playing football last week and it's still really painful. There was no way I'd be able to do 66 miles of braking/changing gears... the sensible thing to do was withdraw. Absolutely gutted :(

In the end I got the valves changed for twenty quid as I am far to useless to drill them myself.  Much happier with them and I have been doing a fair amount of cycling the last couple of weeks.

Obviously a lot also depends on what the the 10 mile route is like ( hilly or flat) , how much you're pushing yourself when you do it and of course , calorie intake 

As an example in Summer I can average around 250 -350 miles a week, don't change my diet and my weight stays more or less the same

There is a lot of variable so these things are only indicative and can vary.

 

If you going at 15mph then 10 miles will take you about 40 minutes.

So that would be about 600 kcal.

5 times a week would be 3000kcal per week so just under half a kilo a week. When people start excising your apatite can grow and you can eat more without realizing it.Given the short time frame and the short distances you would not need to cut back on food but you would need to be disciplined that you roughly the same in calories.

Two weeks to go and I'm down to 98kg, or in old money I've lost 13lbs. Thanks for the info guys. A combination of eating sensibly and getting out on the bike.

It was excellently run and very enjoyable. Even the big climb wasn't too horrific. There were a few folk grumbling about being picked up by the sweep vehicle but other than that, and a couple of crashes I'd recommend it as a starter for getting into sportive / Etape cycling.

Looking to build my distances and endurance for the Deeside 100 mile route next.
