Billy Jean King Posted October 10, 2023 Share Posted October 10, 2023 Grim footage on the news there of thousands of Palestinians trying to cross the border into Egypt which is firmly closed and a bomb / missile landing just metres away (looked like it actually landed on the Egyptian side of the border). The Israelis aren't made of the same stuff militarily nowadays as they were when Moshe Dayan was around complete with eye patch and they used to do things like invade into Egypt across the Sinai Canal. Hamas’ actions were disgusting but that doesn’t justify the civilian deaths that are going to occur as a result of this. You can simultaneously feel that Hamas is pure scum for murdering people and think that Israel bombing Gaza to smithereens is disproportionately harmful to innocent people. It is also possible to say that a ramp up in the conflict, taking aside the horrific death toll, plays into the long term goals of the far right in Israel and to Hamas. The grey in the middle of all of that is a great many non combatant people will die and those people driving all of this will not be the ones that suffer the most. Very very few people want the level of death on both sides we have seen and will see. Frankly, none of us are well versed on the complexities to have such conviction either side is 'right'. I'd assume/hope now many of the facts are known, a lot of people might soften their entrenched views, whatever they might have been before hand, but I know in reality that won't be the case. A stark reminder that our "elected leaders" will allow any form of war crime to happen upon innocent civilians if they profit from it in some way. The worlds fucked and its getting worse, as things are just escalating.
