The New Raith Rovers Thread

What a lovely man. I’m really, really gutted that I was just too young to really appreciate Paquito as a player. I remember him playing but it was before I’d developed any real comprehension of what I was watching. The fact he’s still so well spoken of after all this time is a testament to his quality as well as his character.

As a club, we should be forging strong links with Las Palmas.

I was 13 when Paquito signed for the Rovers, so was old enough (just) to realise just how fucking good he was - and how ridiculous it was to see him play at that level.  Some of the jobbers he was against in the 3rd tier was ridiculous, as was the way he literally glided past them.  My favourite ever Rovers player, absolute class - and seems like a really lovely guy.

I'm really interested to see how we get on against Kilmarnock.  Our away form was hideous last season, taking 2 points from 36 from the teams who finished above us.  That is the main thing that needs to be addressed in the season ahead, so ideally I'd like to see us score some goals in a game without having 4 thousand chances - snatching some points would be just braw.  That will come from being vaguely competent in either box.  I'd also like to see us score a shit goal, a scramble in the box or similar.

I'm really happy with the signings we've made, my main concern is keeping players fit.  Can't help but feel we need another option up top, and a holding midfielder.  I've bored myself saying it, but there is a huge amount of pressure on the signing of Hamilton IMO.  If he is injured or suspended, I just can't see that quality in the opposition box.  Someone last season said that we have all the striking instinct of a Tory cabinet, and that's all I could think of watching the game last midweek.  A genuine presence in the opposition box is what we need to go to Ayr, Morton, Partick et al and get a result (even a draw, as we took zero points from those grounds last season)

It's also difficult to see how Murray keeps the deluge of attacking players when everyone is fit (lol) - I still wouldn't be surprised to see at least one player leave the club, even if its on loan. (I'm assuming Arnott, Mitchell and Masson will be out on loan again also).  Whilst they aren't the same type of player - Gullan, Vaughan, Smith, Easton, Mullin, Ross, Connolly aren't going to be asked to do drastically different jobs - and I doubt any of these players signed to be on the bench.  I do appreciate the depth, especially after how last season ended, but it's difficult to see everyone being happy - especially given the manager has stated he's looking for potentially 3 more bodies.

I do have a feeling we will be okay this season however.  There is a real amount of expectation on the manager of the club and at the end of the day, if we aren't at least a decent £20 bet to finish top 4 at the end of October, then I can see the new regime having their first big decision to make.  I doubt all of the kings horses and all of the kings men have been brought in to finish 7th again, and whilst this is far from a win or bust season - I don't think Murray has a huge amount of time to get things ticking along.  Which is absolutely fine by me, its a big season ahead.  And if worst comes to worst, I think the club is a relatively attractive proposition for another manager to come into.

Was down at the training session today. Left before all the signing stuff started. Vaughan reacting like he'd missed a chance in a final when he fucked up a finish showed why he's such a talent. There where 4 'keepers there though. Does anyone have any idea who the 4th was?

The other keeper looked dead young, and about 5'8", we just assumed he was from the community Foundation

I loved Paquito as well. Even when he played at RB for us he still controlled the midfield at the same time!

Our squad for this season minus injuries surely has to be the best on paper we’ve had for a few seasons now.

If/when all fit. 4231

Dabrowski

Millen

Dick

Murray

Watson

Brown

Matthews

Connolly

Mullin

Vaughan

Hamilton.

Does any other team in the league apart from maybe Dundee United have a stronger first eleven?

Subs: Easton, Smith, Ross, Stanton, Gullan, Arnott, Mitchell, Masson, Thomson (GK)

Could argue that Stanton and Easton on the basis their early season form deserve to be in that starting line up. Gullan too really.

So yeah, someone book the title party bus. ✅😂

I think Stanton & Easton get picked before Matthews and Connolly at the mo.

Would be great to see at some stage a treble substitution where the 3 coming on are arguably stronger than the 3 coming off.

Never really thought about pressure on Murray as I’ve been really buzzing with the signings / feel good factor but he has to get top 4 with this squad. I’m sure the new owners whilst dishing out 3 year contracts have made it clear where they need results to be.

I'd say Stanton should be starting every game he's available. On paper, it's a very strong squad but our luck with injuries over the last 5 years would give even the most optimistic of supporters a cynical edge.

A lot of it will come down to how much we get out of Jack Hamilton as has been mentioned. At the moment he's the only outright 'number 9' that we've got. Even against Albion Rovers it was clear as day that Gullan operates better as a wider player.

It's still a very exciting period to be a Rovers fan. Even if it doesn't pan out this season, you'd hope the continuity in the squad will help us longer term.

No place for McGill, even on the bench?

No Corr either if we're being picky. I'd imagine IM having Corr and McGill on the bench ahead of Mitchell and Arnott. Still, as has been said before, with the strongest squad we've had in years anything less than the playoffs is abject failure
