It’s surely only so long until we start to see the “the board don’t want promotion” and “we can’t afford to go up” being trotted out by supporters of a certain age.

Surprised it hasn't started after losing to Airdrie last Saturday.

It’s started already. Seen a few comments on FB posts after recent results:

“aww hear wi go bottling it again cos can’t afford to go up”

Hear that same statement every year from either a mate, or someone in a discussion that we cannot afford to go up, so we just decide to lie down and lose a few games, so we don’t have to go up 😂

Where exactly did you get any money for Kevin Nisbet? We signed him on a free transfer and then he went to the Pars (we got a nominal fee for him) the Pars then sold him to Hibs for £150k with a 30% sell on fee. You got zilch for Nisbet as there was no development fee payable to anybody apart from us. Same with Jack He dry, he signed for Dundee from Wigan on a free transfer so no money involved there either. Basically, you got £340k from Wigan in 2015 and then nothing as they both left on free transfers

Sorry,  not true.

it’s called FIFA solidarity payments.

nothing to do with sell on fees or development fees.

was well documented at the time that thistle got 40k when Nisbet - and it may even have been 70k it was all dependant on his birthday. went to Millwall and and also the amount for Hendry was similar due to the high transfer fee to Saudi.

it relates to when a player moves to a new Football Association they haven’t played in before. 5% of the transfer fee is divvied among the clubs who developed the player from ages  12 to 21.

Never understood the "can't afford to go up" nonsense.

Yes increased player wages, VAR and possible grass pitch replacement costs need to be considered, but the finances available in the top flight far outweigh these over a sustained period. Go up and straight back down and it may be a struggle but I feel we have the infrastructure to compete in the higher league, won't be easy though.

There is a reason clubs like Ross County, Livingston, St Johnstone etc are desperate to stay in the top flight, even if it means a turgid bottom 6 battle 2 out of 3 seasons.

Totally agree.

You have to have ambition, right? Otherwise, what is the point in all of this?! Unfortunately, this is the downstream effect of the Old Firm on Scottish football - the Premiership is a broken product where the upside is very, very limited and most clubs are destined for a pretty miserable existence. To establish yourself (financially, structurally, reputationally) as a stable Premiership club, you're likely talking a 10+ project where everything on and off the park needs to be managed really well. To maintain that and become a top six club, 20+ years. And in all of this, the most success you are ever likely to experience is a cup win. But you're unlikely to get a cup win from the Championship. It's a question of slowly raising your ceiling but always making sure your floor is safe.

The hardest part is resisting the temptation to throw money at success. If you manage the money wisely, even one season in the Premiership could be the start of longer term success.

Nae chance of Simon Murray coming in. Dundee United will throw everything they have at getting him in if he's open to a move to the Championship.

He’ll likely go back to Dundee as the talk is he wants to move back home and United has just signed a striker on loan

Firstly, great  news that Byrne is now definitely here for the rest of the season and that he can now play in the Scottish Cup.  I have no doubt that we've already had discussions with him about staying on next season too.

As for the issue of promotion, I'm honestly amazed that any Rovers fan would be anything other than 100% sure they wanted us to go up.  I genuinely understand some of the potential negatives mentioned but they would be far outweighed by the positives.

I was a teenager the last time we were in the top league and absolutely loved it.  Even the 96/97 season, which was generally terrible, had plenty of good moments.  Even the day we were relegated with a 5-0 pumping at Fir Park was a laugh.  We knew long before then that we were going down so just enjoyed the day out and wound up the Motherwell fans about coming down with us (they only finished above Hibs on goal difference but Hibs then beat Airdrie in the playoff).

Even the potential for having to change the pitch isn't really an issue.  If we get 3 years' grace for it then I have no doubt we wouldn't do anything until the summer before it needed to be changed.  We'd then have had a couple of seasons in the Premiership, earning Premiership money, so the cost should be perfectly manageable.

Simon Murray would be a superb addition, always liked his physicality and his workmanlike attitude.

He’s under contract though and some of the figures being banded about, we surely cant afford that. Kirkcaldy is a lot closer to Dundee than Dingwall right enough.

Is that a genuine rumour doing the rounds or just more of a wishlist?
