baillieinleeds
Jannie did a great job turning the season around after Sir Jimmy started getting bored. Issue was giving him all that money, then punting him after 3 league losses. We played Rangers then Celtic away, and had Danny Lennon scored his penalty, we wouldn’t have lost to Motherwell. Was it also the time the Scum News reporter went to Starks to get the story of the Jannie sacking and was escorted out the door by Penman. I heard the guy merely slipped than being launched out the door.

As said above, we were in freefall towards the end of Nicholl's tenure (I remember a hiding at Ibrox where we barely attempted to cross the halfway line) and Jimmy Thomson provided a quick fix to ensure we survived comfortably that season. There's no defending some of the signings he made the following close season, but it was no worse than the scatter gun recruitment policy of Iain Munro - Colin Scott (allegedly on £900 basic back then), David Lorimer, Derek McGill, Andy Millen etc mixed in with a few short term unaffordable Scandinavians. It was Jimmy Nicholl (2nd spell) who brought in Keith Wright and Iain Cameron (as part of the Rougier deal) and blew £150 grand on Craig McEwan (who was Alex Smith's blue eyed boy at Clyde).

Thanks for clearing that up. We flirted with the big time and unfortunately we came up short. Heady times though and one I’ll remember fondly. Especially Sir James of Nicholl. The Scandinavians were awesome too, part timers I believe

My memory may be serving me badly but I don't really remember the fans questioning where all this money was coming from at the time either. I remember thinking to myself that all these guys for big money wasn't a good idea. Could just be that we didn't have forums like this at the time and there were many fans all thinking along similar lines by themselves. Specky Ginger
To be fair, we'd just won the league cup, were playing to huge gates in the 1st Division, never mind the Premier League. The cup money along with grants and the Bayern Munich TV money supposedly paid for most of the ground improvements and in the summer of 1996 we'd just sold Crawford, Dair and Sinky to Millwall for a reputed £1.2m. Unfortunately Millwall hit the skids financially and we ended up getting Dair back along with Paul Hartley to offset some of the fee. Unfortunately by that point we'd already lashed out on Harvey, Bonar, Browne, Twaddle etc.
Scottydog
Don't forget the £900k we got from Bolton for Stevie McAnespie. For all that Jimmy Thomson did wrong (and Munro did far worse in my book) he still gave me the highest placed Rovers team finishing position in all my years of supporting.
Beastie Russell
I’m still amazed that there hasn’t been some sort of award or recognition for Sir Jimmy from Kirkcaldy as a town. The pride he gave to oor wee town during that unbelievable period can never be replaced or bought. Freedom of Kirkcaldy for Sir Jimmy, allowing him to lay Lino anywhere he wants

Scottydog
1-0 Us despite the Arabs having stonewall goal and pen not awarded. McHattie rocket to win the game and a solid performance from all. The injury to Wedderburn and Duggan looking to have tweaked something the only downsides, Wedderburns looks bad (maybe 2 to 4 weeks) but Duggans just looked minor and precautionary.
Wardy
We’d be better signing nobody. Nobody can get fucking injured that way. Is Robbie Thompson ok? No doubt he’ll break his arm next week or some shit.

I was there I was at the other end of the pitch looked like McKay. Young Watson done well at right back. Nesbit and Mchattie were the only 2 I noticed that hadn't signed. But I was trying to entertain the kids. Edited July 7, 2018 by williehuggles
