What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

12 Years A Slave

I think I made the mistake seeing it after the oscars. I began watching it expecting the greatest movie ever, by the way the media where playing this up. Even though the film, for me, was overhyped. It was still a good movie.

8/10

The Spectatular Now

A coming of age/ indie movie about an 18 year olds life, without a father, an alcohol problem and being dumped by his girl friend. Until he meets a new girl after sleeping on her lawn while drunk. (Not a euphemism ). A good film.

8/10

The Mist - 8/10

Really excellent Stephen King adaptation by Darabont. Relatively small budget apocalyptic monster tale/allegory for our times. Hugely enjoyable and a fine ending. Big reco, way better than The Green Mile and Shawshank (esp if you like horror).

One of the better King adaptations, imho. The ending is indeed a fecking belter.

I went to see this on Friday. I'd read the book previously which I think took away from my enjoyment of it a bit as I was expecting reveals that never come. The book is quite different - it's set in the Highlands with the main character driving up and down the A9. There are important differences as well, that are difficult to go into without spoiling it

In the book the main character (Isserly) is basically a deformed alien who has been surgically altered to look human, rather than having a suit. She isn't as alluring as the Scarlett Johanssen (who is) and her isolation from her own race is a major part of the plot. There's a scene where Isserly's overseer appears and her lower status due to her changed body is made clear.

The novel also goes into detail about what is happening to the men who Isserly abducts - they are used as food, human flesh being a delicacy to the aliens. The way that the men are abducted is changed, in the book she just picks up hitchikers and incapacitates them with a weapon, whereas in the book she seduces them. There's an element of sex in the book (IIRC she has huge breast implants in the book, all the better to get men into the van with).

I'm not sure this makes it a worse film. Glazer has obviously taken elements of the plot and made it into a more stripped down film. I think if you tried to film some of the details that were cut out you'd have a very long and slightly silly film.

I enjoyed the film, despite the major differences. I liked the idea of Johanssen's alien nature, brutally demonstrated in the beach scene, eventually being stripped back by her increasing empathy I thought Johanssen gave an amazing performance, the way that she developed the character was believable and powerful. I liked the sections with the Glaswegians speaking to her, very funny for a Scottish audience. Did they deliberately put the guy she picked up on teh way home from the Celtic game in a Hibs top?

Overall, I'd give it 8/10.

It can't go without saying, Scarlett Johanssen has to be one of the most beautiful people on earth. Some of the scenes when she's naked are almost literally 'jaw, meet floor'.

I spent more time spotting locations than anything else. I'd like to know where that bothy is.

The beach scene was unsettling, and it has a few moments over the piece, but it's not great. 5/10.

Dunno about the bothy, but the beach scene was filmed at Auchmithie, near Arbroath. I'm think she's driving through Arbroath afterwards. I'm pretty sure you can see the war memorial just across from Gayfield at one point.

12 Monkeys - 7/10

I remember seing this when I was younger and thought it was boring pish. Totally changed yesterday when I gave it a shot again. Really different and fantastic performances from Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. Still unsure if it all happened or Cole's mind was living in two realities. If it was real then did Cole's actions cause it all and thus fate cannot be escaped? Or did the authorities of the future cause it by their relentless pursuit of information?

Up there with one of my favourite films! If you're interested you should check out La Jetee which it was based on. French short film made up entirely of still images. Sounds awful I know but somehow manages to be pretty captivating. Think it's on youtube.

Goodbye Lenin: 9/10

A German comedy (they do exist) about the desperate efforts of a young East Berliner to stop his diehard communist mother who has just emerged from a coma finding out that communism has collapsed in case she has a heart attack and dies. Has a deeper side to it that reveals that the mother was probably faking her devotion to the party after her husband defects and looks at what was good and bad about the former East Germany from an East German viewpoint.

A great film. I love the scene where he takes the nurse on a romantic date... to the Kunsthaus Tacheles.

Great film but I think calling it a comedy is stretching it a bit, sure it has some humorous moments but it's not exactly a comedy. It deals with/has some pretty serious and tragic stuff in it. I wouldn't watch it if I wanted cheering up.

Comedy doesn't always translate well in subtitles. A good example is when the mother is introduced to her new son-in-law Rainer (who is from West Berlin) and he starts mixing up Hitler Youth and Young Pioneer terminology when trying to describe his supposed East German childhood to play along with the whole East Germany continuing as before charade. if you don't have enough of a smattering of German to pick that up the subtitles don't really help explain what the point of that bit of dialogue was. A lot of the comedy also revolves around how the Ossi vs Wessi thing is an ongoing issue and they don't suddenly all become a single German nation again. Even the father who defects is still an Ossi at heart, because in one scene it becomes clear that he is getting his children from his remarriage in the west to watch East German children's television.

Adore - 6/10

Naomi Watts spends most of her time in a bikini if you like that sort of thing. Drama about two childhood female friends in their early/mid 40s (Watts and Robin Wright) who both fall for each others teenage sons (who are also best friends) At almost two hrs its probably 30mins too long as started to drag but the storyline and dynamic between the 4 lead characters is interesting enough.

The Kings of Summer - 9/10

Might be the best film I have seen this year. Really good coming of age film and anyone who loved Perks of Being a Wallflower, Stand By Me, Way Way Back etc will really enjoy this. Had a really limited release here back in August. The three child actors are great and supporting cast is superb as well with Nick Offerman being the standout and Alison Brie also doing well (although slightly underused). It's very funny, has a good cast and a good story and brings back those memories of being a kid again.

I watched the first half of The Kings of Summer last night. Very funny - a few really witty lines, really dry, even fairly dark in bits. Looking forward to watching the rest of it tonight.

Went to see A Long Way Down. 5/10 and a very generous 5/10 at that.

Story wasn't put across well at all and the characters weren't written very well.

The 5/10 comes from Arron Paul and Toni Collettes performances, doing well with the material they had.

Also, was weak enough to make me want to read the book and appreciate what was a really good idea for a story.

Good write up. Two days later I'm still thinking about this film and I can't decide if I enjoyed it or not. Under The Skin indeed.

You're right about the clips where she speaks to Glaswegians. :thumsup2

I'd never really paid much attention to Johansson before but since watching this film...

Hanging the scarf out the window :lol: What a typically Scottish attempt at seduction

Went to see the Winter Soldier last night really enjoyed it

8.5/10

anyone who has seen it notice the following?

When talking about who they would be targeting they mention Steven Strange aka Dr Strange who is meant to have his own film coming up at some point

Also on Fury's headstone it reads "the path of the righeous man" I had a giggle to myself on that one
