Top 3 Scottish League Club Names

Recommended Posts

In the early days of Edinburgh football there were teams called the 3rd Edinburgh Rifle Volunteers and Leith Primrose which means that if Hearts and Hibs hadn't emerged as the predominant teams in Edinburgh and Leith the capital might now be hosting the Guns 'n' Roses Derby. If Hibs hadn't come back after shutting down in 1891 then it would be the Hearts and Flowers Derby

Other 'shipyarders' / 'ship-owners' names include Hall Russell Utd and Salvesons BC.

Royal Albert and Hawick Royal Albert both take their names from a ship owned by a Lanarkshire coal magnate, IIRC.

How many different units of geographic division can we come-up with?

Preston North End (and various others)

Knockbreda Parish

Dulwich Hamlet

Northampton Town (and many others)

Stevenage Borough / Johnstone Burgh

Brechin City (and many others)

Ross County

Fort William

So is Heart of Midlothian B versus Edinburgh University the Hearts and Minds Derby?

In terms of league clubs only, it's Heart of Midlothian, Hamilton Academical and Queen of the South, of course (with Bonnyrigg Rose coming in fourth).

Anything else is madness.

Agree 100%, though I also love the names Linlithgow Rose, Forres Mechanics and Kirkintilloch Rob Roy!

The worst ones are ones like Aberdeen FC which is quite the least imaginative name for a football club from Aberdeen

It’s all the more tragic because the city’s previous representatives were wonderfully named, but legendarily incompetent “Bon Accord” and “Orion”

Your own club were supposedly named after a dance hall named after a Walter Scott novel.

If the dance hall had been named after another Scott novel, Ivanhoe, would you now be a fan of 'hoes?!

The worst team name I've ever come across is United City (nee Ceres-Negro) of the Philippines Football League.

As far as Scott Titles go the best ones are “ Castle Dangerous”, “Phantasmagoria” and “Bizarro”

your own club should consider these next time it’s changing its name

I'd go for Castle Dangerous FC. It makes me think of Rik and Ade as the Dangerous Brothers!

Scottish football always seems to have loved its horticultural connections. Can people think of more flowers/plants/trees?

Partick Thistle

Linlithgow Rose

Broxburn Shamrock

Dundonald Bluebell

Ormiston Primrose

Easthouses Lily

Dundee Violets

Royal Oak

There must be others.

Loanhead Mayflower. The town where I grew up hasn’t had a junior club since they folded in 1962. Previously there was a club called Polton Vale.

There's a few defunct clubs with good names that played in the Scottish Leagues:

St Bernards

Renton

Cowlairs

Abercarn

Dykehead

Galston

Mid-Annandale

Nithsdale Wanderers

Solway Star

Peeble Rovers

Royal Albert

Peebles Rovers & Royal Albert are still alive. The Mid-Annandale & Nithsdale Wanderers names are still around albeit spiritual successors rather than the original clubs.

Paper Stainers from Whiteinch.

Tarbolton Bruntonians sound like they played in Tlentifini Maarhaysu.

"And after the big match from Pittodrie, we pay another enchanting visit to Tlentifini Maarhaysu".

Over here in the East, Musselburgh Athletic were known as Musselburgh Bruntonians (and Musselburgh Fern) after the Brunton wire works in the town. There’s also the Brunton Hall which was paid for by John Brunton jr.
