Raith v Rangers

Recommended Posts

After reading what the Cockwomble said......

Should somebody not point out it not his job to guide them with what to say to ensure they get off, rather his job to see if guilty they are fairly dealt with.

His press release could be re - typed by someone as stupid as Traynor, if he was still there, and it would get them off...

His job is to carry out the policy decided by the clubs. The clubs, not Doncaster, refused to adopt strict liability. Blame all the clubs including yours and mines.

That's true.

It would seem sensible to pull us into line with how UEFA and many domestic leagues operate. The strict liability thing might seem unfair if clubs genuinely are doing everything to discourage such behaviour, but sanctions for clubs probably would do more to accelerate change than anything else.

Of course, mixed messages get sent out when you have police praising the excellent behaviour of fans at the League Cup semi, then we get this outrage over the Raith game. It's thoroughly inconsistent and this doesn't make the problem easier to tackle.

Maybe the authorities don't want to cause them any more financial hardship by fining them. Surely TV coverage could be used to get convictions of those singing .

Football does not need these despicable fan(nies)

Strict liability is where the actual physical act of a crime is commited but where the mens rea (mental part of the crime) doesn't need to be present. In Scots law, both are normally required, but this doesn't apply in strict liability cases.

Speeding is an example of a strict liability offence - the state of mind (recklessness, intentional etc) doesn't have to be proven for the offence to be committed. If you're over the speed limit, it's enough.

The issue shouldn't be what the SPFL are doing about it, it should be what the Police are doing. How many officers did Raith Rovers have to have at the game, and pay for? At least 1500 people clearly violated the law inside the stadium. How many were arrested?

Having said that, it's ridiculous the SPFL don't have the same rules are UEFA on this, and we won't get anywhere until we do.

I thought it was hilarious towards the end. They had a massive line of stewards in front of the South Stand in the unlikely event Rovers scored an equaliser. Meanwhile, for the full 90 minutes the other end of the stadium had been singing outdated and moronic songs. It's a ridiculous situation. The club could do more, the governing bodies could do far more and the police could do more. The sad thing is, that these fans will never be punted while in the stadium. They only know how to react in different phases, usually involving outrage before violence. Even bans or fines are met with the conspiratorial tones of "Fifa/UEFA/SFA/SPFL hate us..." rather than an acceptance of "Right lads, maybe we should sing more about supporting our club"

It'd be nice if more fans were more progressively thinking. However, we're a decade and a half into the 21st century. Fans shouldn't need it spelled out to them about being "up to their knees in F*nian blood".

Some people would say that since rovers sold the tickets its their problem, thankfully I'm more enlightened and think that if anyone's prepared to sing banned songs then they deserve to be punished by the police and courts.

Nobody would say that except brain dead bigots.
