Andy Murray Latest and General Tennis Chat

Murray is a physical specimen. I don't believe he'll have much trouble competing deep in this tournament and in the Open.

The issue he had in 2012 was the time difference causing him fatigue IMO. He was usually already in North America when the London games were on, giving him more time to prepare and his body clock change, London didn't really allow that.  Rio, Cincy and NYC are all pretty similar in terms of latitude.  Maybe an hour difference either way.

I reckon with Murrays form, Djokovics form and the steel that Lendl appears to give him, Murray could go on a bit of a run of major wins and rack up another 3 or 4 before he reaches the brow of the hill

Indeed, after he won his first, Andy was asked how many he'd win and he replied 3.  He's undoubtedly re-thought that total now.

I'd be gutted if he finishes on less than six. Hopefully he wins the US Open and/or finally ends his long wait in Australia.

Six-eight is undoubtedly the least of what Murray's talents deserve given the era he has been part of and it would truly allow him to take a well-earned place among some of the greats.

He got rekt 6-1, 6-3 in the end. Wawrinka and Tsonga got put out on that side of the draw earlier too. Nishikori is also a set down to Tomic with Murray playing the winner in the next round should he progress.

Really hope he wins this given the remaining field is pretty much made up of jobbers or upstarts.

If he wins tonight it will be his 600th on the ATP tour.

Nice extra bit of motivation for him then, as well as getting some revenge for last year's US Open exit.

Miles away currently.  Winning this title will only gain him 640 points as he made the semi finals this year.  He also dropped 1000 points from not defending the Canadian Masters and his run in the olympics gained him no ranking points.  He is around 6000 points behind Djokovic.  Djokovic has lots of points to defend the rest of the year, so he could be caught this year, but Murray has to keep on winning.

If Murray was to win Cinci he would be about 800 points behind in the race to be year end number one.

If he wins Cincinnati, he'll gain an additional 640 points with Novak losing 600, so there's a gain of about 1240 on Novak. If he wins the US Open, he'll gain 1820 points, with Djokovic losing at least 800 depending on where he finishes.

That could mean a swing of around 4000 points in Murray's favour in the space of a month.

If Murray was to win Cinci, the US Open and the World Tour Finals, do you reckon that would do it for year end world number one? Or would he need to win in one of Shanghai or Paris too?

He is scheduled to play Beijing this year, and he may play a 500 before Paris as well.  Murray could win all three you mentioned and still not be number one, but he could win all three and easily make number one.  It really depends on the form of both players.  An early exit for either of them coupled with a win for the other would probably seal it.

Murray needs to beat Djokovic each time they meet until the end of the year if he wants to be assured number one.

Yep, having a record of something like 3-11 or 3-12 in GS finals when you retire is absolutely horrendous, regardless of the player or era you play in.

Murray's first grand slam final he had already beaten Del Potro and Nadal before getting beat from the best player ever, in his prime.
No one else has had to compete with 3 10+ major winners at the same time. Also the top 100 is miles better than it's ever been. Its a shame really but you can't argue that he's a great tennis player. Streets ahead of everyone else but stuck in an era with the gods.
