Proposals made to double the council tax of second home owners.

Zero prizes for guessing which Highland MSP is against this very sensible idea.

Fergus Ewing, the MSP for Inverness and Nairn and a former cabinet secretary for rural economy, told The Mail on Sunday: “These proposals will punish those who have invested hard-earned cash in homes and will lead many to invest abroad instead.

“This will drive money out of Scotland, damaging many local economies with less money going to local builders, shops and tradesmen.”

Does he think that someone having a second home will use the local shops more often than someone living there permanently would?

The house next to mine is a holiday cottage. The people who visit very rarely use the local shop, usually unloading their supplies bought from elsewhere upon arrival. Or, a supermarket delivery van arrives not long after they do.

He’s no doubt got a few robust quantitative studies that demonstrate the clear link between the dis application of the 50% discount in 2013  and a fall in investment in scenic rural areas. He’d have to be a complete simpleton to think that absentee landlords were a net benefit otherwise.

And I’m certain that any such quantitative study would also take account of all the other social, financial, economic and demographic factors that would contribute to any such fall.

It's Scotland wide and it's not necessarily a doubling. Each LA has the authority to impose a "multiplier" on second homes up to 200% from next year. From a couple of meetings I've been at recently most Councils won't go to 200% next year, opting for a phased increase up to the maximum over a number of years.

It will also incorporate Council Tax on properties let on a short term basis (your Airbnb types). These should be classed as self catering accommodation and be subject to Business rates (where most wouldn't pay or pay way less than C/Tax) but that requires them to have been licensed via the LA short term let scheme. Many haven't and thus are about to incur large hikes in Council Tax or get licensed. The tax implications and cost of getting a property to licensed standard are going to give many an uncomfortable dilemma.

Right out the blue, total Council tax freeze after LAs have spent the last 6 months preparing for the intended changes for bands E to H and 2nd homes. This is total "on the hoof" nonsense that is bound to impact services as it appears to have been plucked out of thin air rather than costed given COSLA have said it's the first they had heard mention of it today.

Maybe a gentle reminder to Musk and his like that sometimes people say "no".  Don't know if the workers will win, but I hope so.

Always thought that song reflected the Sunday Post view of unions, rather than that of the Morning Star.

It did, it was a dig at perceived union power and ceased my interest in The Strawbs.

On a more recent tack, I was dismayed to read that Elvis Costello is to co-host a show on GB News with Peter Andre.

Looks like the end of the road for Mujahideen sympathiser Ross “the bible made me a socialist” Greer.

Hardly, did you read it?

So it’s a case of the unionist papers looking for dirt on him. Disappointing tbh.

It reminds me of Private Eye doing a round up of the Lib Dem party conference years ago with one line: "Bearded man in sandals walks out".
