Absolutely bang on sadly. It's the only chance they have down south, which won't cut it in Scotland.I agree but the problem for Labour is that the only way for them to get into power is to follow the English and Welsh electorates away from the left into the centre ground.

I fear that "UK politics" will become much like Irish politics with the choice of two right or centre right parties in order to appease the electorate down there.

A terrible thought

Centre ground?  Thick as pigshit, forelock tugging xenophobes you mean.

It is difficult to gauge whether Long-Bailey or Phillips is the worst candidate at the moment.

It’s not.  I’m not a fan of RLB and I don’t think she’s the right person for the job, but she is a genuine committed politician and a socialist beside.

Phillips is a self serving gobby vacuous bint.

Ohhh

Keir Starmer's got the head of Labour First running his campaign. A ballsy move if he's trying to woo the left with his tales of working down't mill before going to uni.

Then there is an option of Tory and Tory Lite.  Not an attractive proposition imo.

The correct approach would be for Labour to feign being “Tory lite” to win over the electorate and then slowly transition back to the centre left once they’re actually in power

That was for a long time the thing someone like Dan Hodges was recommending, but he has since gone full Tory which leads to the next issue with that. If one party is Tory lite and one party is full fat Tory, and you've got a very large number of racist voters, who are they going to choose?

Tony Benn once said something along the lines of “If you offer people the choice of two Conservative parties don’t be surprised if they pick the real one”.

The reality being the Tories didn’t win entirely because they were Tory. And being Tory-lite would be a disastrous strategy for Labour. There is no quick fix for Labour and people need to accept that. It’ll take enduring the Tory rule and hoping that Boris and/or Brexit fucks up. All while building up support through a leader that isn’t a crazed anti-semite and can actually gain popularity.

Anything but Tory or Tory lite hasn't been in power since I was born

Which was a fucking long time ago

There is not only no easy fix, there is no fix at all other than another stab at Tory lite

Posters on here were warning about the awfulness of Philips and Swinson before they hit the media headlights, and I assumed it was just annoyance at their accents and mild misogyny. Been proven well wrong.

No Scottish leader will ever be palatable to the English electorate again

There’s no point wanting Labour to go Tory lite because they’ll lose some voters, wouldn’t win because of that and wouldn’t win anyway, and it wouldn’t be Labour.

Labour didn’t lose because of their ideas (Brexit aside), they lost because their last 3 leaders have been Miliband, Harperson and the anti-Semite.

First term of Blair's government wasn't really Tory lite. They might have even been progressive in the second two but none of that matters because Iraq.

It actually DOES matter though. It shows that sort of government can win over the UK electorate. Iraq was just a blot on the copybook.

Won't be a Labour Government this side of 2030. Th3 present crew wanting to be leader will be long forgotten by then. Next Labour Prime Minister probably isn't yet an MP.

I pretty much agree with this unless Brexit goes disastrously wrong. Miliband and now especially Corbyn have fucked Labour completely. Bizarre that Corbyn had such a fan group.

A blot on the copybook.  Possibly the biggest understatement I’ve seen on P&B.

It would have been interesting if Labour had done a Blair and said they would stick to Tory spending plans for the first Parliament. Like 40 genuine new hospitals rather than 6 refurbishments for example, and an actual 50,000 new nurses instead of trying to persuade current ones not to leave. And an end to austerity.  Leaving other plans for "if the economy permits", like nationalisation etc.
