Labour has shifted economically to the right and become irrelevant in many other areas. I've said for years that for a sizeable and politically lazy percentage of the electorate, and especially the Scottish one, that simple word 'Labour' translates into voting levels unwarranted by the contemporary party's policies. Simply not being the Tories doesn't cut it.

I genuinely worry about what kind of world my wee boy will inherit because things are just going backwards.

I was word-for-word going to write exactly that. You really shouldn't judge a book by its cover but he looks like a 'Turning Point UK' season ticket holder.
Dunning1874
Labour are being investigated by the Police over their candidate selection in Croydon East, which they had to suspend in November after it was found that several members in the constituency who were eligible to vote didn't get access to the online ballot. It transpired that somehow members' email addresses had been changed without their knowledge.

Seriously? For those not old enough to remember, Thatcher's first term in office was an absolute fucking disaster: not quite up to the clusterfuck standards of the current government, but a lot worse than anything from then till 2019. Totally crashed the economy, and it was only the same level of foreign policy ineptitude getting us into an unnecessary conflict with Argentina over the Falklands that got her re-elected.

I was there and I don't disagree with any of that. What's probably happened here is that a group of bright young things in the Labour policy laboratory have hit on this zinger in the hope that it tickles the fancy of your average Daily Express reader. I'm surprised a model Spitfire hasn't been thrown in.

There was also the SDP. Labour under Foot wanted to be democratic socialist while David Owen and others wanted to be Social Democrat. Under FPTP, this split the anti-Tory vote and Thatcher strolled back in. Also, I agree that fighting over the Falklands got the nostalgic patriotic vote. A Union Jack still flies proudly over South Georgia even if nobody actually lives there. Hooray.
