Bad news is hospitalisation in the general population remains high, so it could be a while before restrictions are lifted. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-01-29/world-s-most-vaccinated-nation-struggles-with-new-virus-variants I'm not really sure the pretty obvious is bad news. "Vaccine not protecting those not yet vaccinated" is a route I don't expect even the UK media to go down.

In the meantime, tweak the vaccine so that the countries struggling can vaccinate their population and resolve the matter. It is not acceptable to continue enforcing restrictions in the UK because a new variant has been discovered elsewhere. Stop it coming in and go from there. I agree it shouldn't be an automatic response but it would depend on factors such as where i,.e. somewhere in Europe will be more concerning than somewhere in Southeast Asia and what is known about the variant's make up i.e. is the incubation period similar to current strains?

Given that most of their elderly population have been protected, and according to many on here it's supposed to be only coffin dodgers up till now who get it badly enough to need hospitalisation, I'd say it's bad news for anyone hoping for a relaxation of restrictions as soon as the wrinklies are vaccinated. If it takes 10 days for the vaccine to start working well after the first dose and around 11 days for an infection to result in hospitalisation you need to wind back at least three weeks to see what portion of the high risk demographics were vaccinated at that point. Add another 10 days or so on deaths and we are still looking at what was happening a month ago. Les Cabbage
Elderly Gran and Grandad vaccinated this morning which is great news, my Grandad isn’t keeping great these days so it’s a bit of a relief, they were given the Brexit one. Bet Bill Gates can’t wait to get his teeth into tracking their trip to Lidl and how they enjoy their evenings watching Coronation Street. If anything the Gates conspiracy loonballs should be clamouring to get a bit of Windows 10 into their veins, their anti-virus is actually really good.
Todd_is_God
Looking at our hospitalisations (and being slightly liberal with the 45-64 group treating it as 50-64), once we complete phase 1 of out vaccination programme, a 98% drop in hospitalisations among that group would reduce that 17,257 to just 345. When you consider that there will be those under 50 vaccinated too, the number of hospitalisations becomes very small indeed and, as we work towards every adult, almost completely insignificant. I don't see where the bad news is here at all. If anything, it's absolutely fantastic news. The only people who could possibly think this is bad are those who want absolutely no one to get ill from covid, which, to me anyway, is completely unrealistic and therefore should be politely dismissed. Too many people (NS being one) are being sucked in by her (frankly worrying) statements

Yep, looks like the Scottish Government waiting for the R number to drop well below 1 so they can do this and essentially send it skyrocketing towards 1 again.
