Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Laughing out loud that it's moved onto kids not being as "effective at catching or transmitting as adults". There's no one even debating whether children transmit the virus as much as adults. That's absolutely brilliant that they do not seemingly.

Despite this, 39% of the cases of Covid-19 recorded in our neighbouring country occurred in education last week, with the vast majority in schools. I guess ONS data just isn't enough evidence.

God knows how high the cases would be if they were as "effective" as adults at transmitting the virus.

If you're prepared for the virus to spiral out of control further, putting you, your children's and the wider public's health at risk so your kids can be in an enclosed building with hundreds of other people for 30+ hours per week, at least admit it rather than resorting to embarrassing mental gymnastics. It's a perfectly understandable position to take.

All it says is 39%  of incidents were reported in educational settings. Incidents being defined as two or more positive cases within 7 days.

Now, if you treat English and Scottish data as interchangeable (i.e. driven by the same trends)  then Primary Schools in England are providing 12% of all incidents, but weekly Scottish data shows that only 2.5% of total positive cases are being reported in Primary School children.

Clearly a bit of a disconnect between those figures.

The PHE data also can't state that the educational settings is the index case for the outbreak. It could still be the case that a staff member imports the virus into the school from previous social interaction and gives it to another staff member.  The data also doesn't show how large each incident is, of course.

Italy reporting their highest daily Covid cases in 5 months. They really seemed to have it under control as well.

I'm sure I read there was a reopening of a sector there on 14 September but can't remember what it was. [emoji848]

Edit- it was the libraries I think. That seems to ring a bell!

Lazio (which includes Rome) made face masks compulsory from yesterday during the day - it had previously just been 6pm to 6am as it is nationally.

€400 fines for not wearing them.

Guardian has an article covering the reasons for rising cases in Italy.

That seems to be the way of things with that particular poster. As the sadly departed @ali_91 said, "the biggest hypocrite on the forum".

The other one obsessed with the alleged looks of VT, who incessantly posts the image of a terrible character from Still Game, is or was a teacher for goodness sake!

What a world.

Meeting abuse with abuse is fine by me partner.

I wont seek the approval of a poster who was banned very recently for bullying other if its all the same to you. Would suggest you seek to meet higher standards in that regard yourself.

Also, since Chris just rinsed your pie chart, can you maybe delete it from your clipboard?

If VT wasn't such an abusive w**k then he wouldn't get posters biting back.

The boys been pishing his frillies for about 4 months over the prospect of school kids being prioritised for education. Didnt think it was my place to squash his dreams quite as thoroughly as yourself.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Sunday that he intended to “rewind” the reopening of nine neighborhoods in New York City that have had a testing positivity rate of more than 3 percent over the last seven days.
That means the closure of nonessential businesses and public and private schools in those neighborhoods, which are in Brooklyn and Queens.

Fun fact: Scotland's positive test rate is currently 13.3%.

Interesting that sexism is also acceptable but using the reputation system is not.

Downloaded the app on Wednesday, and have now had two notifications that I've been in close proximity with somebody who has shown signs. When I click the notification, just goes to the app with no further detail.

Assuming if I had to self isolate, it would come up on the app itself.

It’s a well known sexist turn of phrase.

I think I might’ve put said turn of phrase into circulation on p&b (tbc) so since I decided I own it I’ve decided that it’s not sexist and never was.

Ya broken dick.

Are there any rules for getting tested in NY? I know here you need to be symptomatic (to say that you're symptomatic)

I genuinely think that in 20-30 years time schools won't be anything like what they are just now.

The increases in modern technology means that it's possible to learn absolutely anything you want, for free, at a time and place of your own choosing. The logistical advantages school has - childcare, staff to motivate / encourage the learners, preparation for exams etc. - will be solved by someone a lot cleverer than me, and we'll see a rapid change in education.

I feel confident that any substantial shifts in education (at least in the UK/US) will likely be heavily influenced by the New Optimists/ tech utopians and will suck for anyone whose main priority isn't cutting budgets

Anyway...

Aren't reported cases generally lower on a Sunday? That is concerning.

There were 14,094 people tested yesterday (5,690 of whom hadn’t been tested before), so the actual percentage of positives was 5.4.

I’ve said this before but they seem to be doing total number of positives / newly tested people rather than total number of positives / total number of tests to reach the percentage. Unless the other 8,404 people who had already been tested before yesterday were all negative yesterday then the percentage being given out is bullshit.

That's them doing anti-body kits for certain professions. In Scotland it's teachers and they're trying to work out what proportion of the population has already had it

My wife ordered one for me because she is known to panic and this morning I woke up with a bit of a head cold.
