Absolute madness to even suggest any sort of restrictions continuing following rollout of an effective vaccine.

Everything should at that point be open without further restriction or threat of restrictions. Otherwise what are we actually doing this for and where and when will it ever end?

Lockdowns and restrictions are a means to an end. The vaccine is that end. That's what we've been told since day one, 'we will never be truly free of restrictions until a vaccine is available'. To pare that back to a revised 'we have an effective vaccine but more restrictions are needed until we know more in regards to if it protects further spread' was never an option and is simply not viable.

The point of restrictions was to prevent the NHS being overwhelmed and people needlessly dying. At this point in the proceedings, they cannot now just decide that its suddenly to prevent everyone dying or to set new conditions at their discretion.

And yet, when they do, no one (and really this applies mostly to the media) pushes back.

I've never considered myself to be one of those mad conspiracy theorists but if the government even remotely considers keeping restrictions in place when it's clear they're no longer required then my tinfoil hat will be firmly on.

It was in fact the exact opposite on Sky tonight. The umpteenth boffin today wheeled out to be "guided" gently by the news anchor saying (paraphrased) "but surely we can't just stop mask wearing and social distancing once the vulnerable have been vaccinated " when he seemed to be veering towards that stance. He quickly came round to that viewpoint once steered in the right direction

I suppose looking at it logically they might have a vested interest in keeping us all news watching in the form of viewing figs - it's either that or an attempt to keep the majority onside during the rollout although it looks a policy likely to backfire surely ?

It's a fine balance. Keeping people onside is obviously important until the bulk of the vaccines for the most at risk are done, but if they make people feel for too long like it's not going to make a great difference to restrictions once that's achieved, they risk making people just go "f**k it"

Clarity and a realistic routemap are needed urgently.

One year ago today, the first press release was issued by the Wuhan Health Commission about cases of a novel pneumonia connected to a seafood market.

This was the first reference to the pandemic in the media.

So, the latest schools approach is basically...bung 33 kids into a small classroom for the day. However, once they leave the gates at the end of the day, they cannot go into anyone's else's house, and if they want to meet anyone else, can only do so if its 1 person......and its outside.

Makes perfect sense....after all school buildings are still safer than the 'community' it seems.

If all the over 50s are expected to have their first shot by late spring, so probably late May, 5 months away, and the time between shots is 4-12 weeks, or about 3 months, then presumably at least 40% of those are going to have had their 2nd shots. That would surely mean that front line health workers, over 65s, and those with underlying conditions will have mostly been fully vaccinated. If that is the case, surely we should be in level 0/1 restrictions at the very most, with higher restrictions only used if there is a particularly concerning outbreak?

That is still utter nonsense

It had turned the vast majority of people's working life on its head forever it's not a prediction it's actually happened.

Thing is of course that at the start of lockdown, March/April time, there seemed to be a vibe that life was different and potentially better, maybe we could change how we live, but as soon as things started to open up everyone wanted back to the old normal, and now it is very much that way, there are restricions in place right now but most people just seem to want back to their old lives, no matter how bad they were.
