Coronavirus (COVID-19)

You claimed that lockdown would allow them to 'get up to speed on vaccination'. If the vaccination centres are closed then it self-evidently doesn't do this.

They're not going to go from 25% to 70+% coverage in 3 days.

There's no denying that Australia and NZ have fucked up their vaccination programmes but I do find this gloating on the subject a bit distasteful. If this was ISAGE or anyone else celebrating being "right" in their predictions they'd be getting shouted down left, right and centre in here for being c***s, but it seems to be fair game if you want to point and laugh at Oz/NZ.

I doubt anything will ever make me feel as disillusioned with 'centre-left' politics as the freaks who have been hoodwinked by the policies of Australia and New Zealand, and the subsequent misplaced sanctimony that goes with it.

It was fair game for Australia and New Zealand's politicians and their assorted fluffers in iSAGE to give it big licks about their geographical fortune and psycho authoritarian border policy 'paying off' in 2020. Now the shoe is on the other foot.

One positive thing about Australia's government is that it collapses into infighting every five minutes, so the population should get the chance to vote for a less hysterical policy soon enough. Ahern used that temporary 'vindication' to secure a new term, so NZ are stuck on a single track.

Oh aye, New Zealand have made a real hash of it. Made Sweden look like lockdown central.

Yeah, I'd rather we didn't have this dick waving contest from either side.

They don't hold elections every time it falls apart though, instead the ruling party just vote in another one of their useless chumps as the next Prime Minister. They had their shot in the election a couple of years ago and much like our own cursed island they decided to re-elect their own version of the Tories.

If you look at the NZ decision to close vaccination centres through the prism of their zero Covid strategy, then it makes sense. Within zero-Covid, all human interaction must, as far as possible, be stopped when there are cases (or, as here, a single case). So having people come from various households to a single centre counts as a risk of transmission/growth. So closing these centres for 3 or 7 days makes sense if - and only if - you are chasing zero Covid.

I'm not sure where this leads for the future though. Will they lock down over a single case when 50% of the population is vaccinated? 75%? When, in short, does zero Covid end and endemic life-with-the-virus begin? The worry here is that the expectations around zero Covid mean that for many (including many politicians), no amount of Covid is acceptable within the country.

It's because they need time to get up to speed on vaccination that keeping cases to a minimum for now is the strategy. If they keep it going once they have a decent percentage vaccinated, that's where it would get stupid.

No doubt they have done well on keeping deaths and infections so low but their long term strategy looks to be lacking. As only 20% fully vaccinated (if thats right) doesnt look like they will be opening up any time soon.

Short term thinking they done well, long term thinking doesnt seem to be so good

For whatever reason they've obviously been slow with vaccination but the pace is picking up, 16s and over can book from Sept first and they're hoping everyone who wants it will be done before the end of the year. Apart from foreign travel they've been open the whole time but for 4 or 5 weeks in total.

How can the pace pick up if the vaccine centres are closed to ‘keep people safe’?

Genuinely, how bad does Swinney need to be before he's catapulted from any position in government?

The clue is in the name, John, they are EMERGENCY powers. If we have another emergency you can get them back again, you don't need them permanently, you bald, nannying, useless, specky c**t.
