Have a couple of pints, get into the game, be subjected to abject misery for 45 mins, maybe a half time pie, repeat abject misery, couple of pints after the game. What more do you fucking want? Heards of wildebeest sweeping majestically across the pitch at half time? Mount Krakatoa erupting from the top of the main stand whenever there’s a corner? Milfy nurses dotted strategically about the stands to mop your brows? Just saw this, theres a guy on CaleyThistleOnline who is always bleating like a wee hoor about this. 'Make it a good atmosphere outside the ground, have stalls selling food, a beat the goalie, tables and benches for eating food, something for the kids etc' Something for the kids is what soft play areas were invented for m8, not outside a football ground. Take your kids there if they're bored at the football.

Fine if it’s a 1980’s summer gala, perhaps not so much in a stadium carpark in the January sleet.

On the pavement next to Stadium Road?

Charles Stiles
I went to a Man City game and found the City Square 'pre-match experience' as underwhelming as most fans there. Not many were paying any attention to the stage with the DJ, local band and interview with some unheard of former player. A big screen with old match highlights faired little better. All that mattered were the beers and food bits. It's going to take clubs a lot longer than they think to Americanise the UK fan's desire for a couple of beers and a chat with your mates as the preferred build up when actually going to a match.

I go to London every year for the NFL International games, and the pre-match ‘razzmatazz, outside Wembley or Spurs works. It works because no matter who the two teams playing are, there will be 60,000 to 80,000 NFL fans there wearing jerseys of all 32 NFL teams. Not a tribal situation involving a home team, and a long standing, mostly unliked (or stronger) visiting rival. The fan zones and beer trucks, stages and cheerleaders etc ramps up the excitement at Wembley for Jacksonville Jaguars v Philadelphia Eagles (or whoever), and I’m well up for joining in, wearing my Denver Broncos jersey even though they’re not playing, and there’s no aggro, no issue. It would do absolutely fcuk-all for me in the car park at the SMiSA Stadium for a midweek game against Ross County in January, in the pissing rain and freezing cold.
DiegoDiego
Fan zones (a horrific phrase which has unfortunately stuck) do work for football in many other countries, including ones with far colder winners than us.The only thing which would prevent it being done well here would be nanny state/think of the children/NIMBYism.

It's tribal in that there were still 2 competitors plus there were 32 tribes represented, you being the Denver rep. They just mix better than sections of football fans. That set up actually sounds a bit similar to the old days at Murrayfield when there were picnics/parties in the car park before internationals.

One of the cardinal rules of football: You don't change the name of the team to make a fast buck without consulting people who have followed the team for nearly 30 years, from playing on a public park when you had to scrape "dogs' eggs" off the pitch, through being steward, programme editor, committee member, match secretary, turnstile operator, half time draw seller, bus convener, sponsor, photographer, decorator of changing rooms and all round mug ready to part with cash without said people being ever so slightly peed off about it. As an example imagine Cowdenbeath announcing they were changing the home colours to black and white stripes to try and attract more Pars fans.. And you especially don't pee off people who were Meadowbank Thistle fans and had the experience of the whole franchising the club to Livingston farrago and have already had to walk away from one club because they weren't wanted. It gets easier the second time round, believe me.
