It’s an illustration of a planned inter-connectors. This is the current state of subsea power cables.

Looks like they've got a lot of cables tangled there. That can't be good.

Pleasingly for all the other nations feeding energy to a particular part of the UK with these new cables, they will be getting paid handsomely.

They, of course, are not useful idiots.

These are commercial relationships between private companies. The payments don't go to countries. The UK government does not pay the Dutch government for electricity our grid draws from there.

They get paid whatever the market sets through capacity auctions and the price differences between the two ends.

I'm probably being whooshed but in case not, those are offshore windfarms.

Wonder if they're angry about all the other interconnectors that are making renewable energy succeed across northern Europe, or if it's just the ones that go between Scotland and England.

Pleasingly, the one between the UK and the Netherlands is called BritNed.

The GB - Morocco project mentioned at the bottom right there is really interesting. A huge Saharan solar farm to provide energy during the day, coupled with a huge windfarm to provide energy when the sun goes down and the wind blows off the ocean all night.

This is just wrong!

The UK's biggest suppliers are France and Norway. The electricity exported from both countries comes from entirely state owned companies (EDF and Statnett respectively).

Unlike Scotland the public in these countries will actually greatly benefit from exporting energy to England.

Just because they're state owned doesn't mean they're not straight commercial transactions. The charging mechanism is exactly the same for those interconnectors as for the others.

Lol...

The point being that the Norwegian and French public massively gain from the export of their electricity. Money flowing indirectly into their treasury.

Despite currently exporting a similar amount to Norway, and that capacity due to expand massively, the Scottish public will gain nothing........

What we will continue to gain though is higher than they should be power bills as we continue subsidizing the areas of demand.

If it's just for one year, spending about £80K more than your income doesn't seem disastrous for a political party. Most of them end up utterly boracic after a period in power, after all.

A bigger concern is more likely that they're spending about half a million per annum on a project with risibly small support, and no sign of that improving. They even had a former minister who came eighth here at the last election. Whatever the plan is, it's not working.

A right collection of oddballs ... and Philippa Whitford, who I actually quite like!

Has she said or done something 'oddball' recently that I've missed?

Not sure, she's maybe just going along to show face.

There's 2 events taking place next month, this one, and a left wing one. Both in Glasgow of course.

John Curtice is a speaker at the Conter one, which is quite funny (in a good way).
