Russian invasion of Ukraine

There would've been a bitter kind of irony if all the focus was on Russia/Ukraine, only for India/Pakistan to be the war that starts a Nuclear Holocaust.

Pakistan has a "first strike" policy in the war. If they believe India is attempting to attack or invade Pakistan, with any form of weapon, then they'll respond with nuclear weapons.

If Trump was still in the White House we'd all be marvelling at the weird spectacle of a midnight sunrise or two by now. GBN is genuinely more ridiculous than Fox tbh.

Trump was Putin's puppet can't think he would have done never much at all.

That said I'm surprised how far Boris has gone but then again as a man who was itching to be a Churchill figure he'll be as happy as a pig in shit even if all his donors end up penniless.

If anyone wants to go down in history today they can broker a peace

The gung ho types of the past would lead to annihilation

I read yesterday of a reported incident, no idea if it's actually true. 4 Russian tanks rolled into a Ukrainian village and parked in the centre. The soldiers got out and siphoned fuel from 2 tanks into the other 2 then they all drove away. The locals came out from their houses and put Ukrainian flags on the tanks left behind. Later that day, 2 Russian tanks came into the village and opened fire on the two tanks with Ukrainian flags on them. After they were destroyed, the Russian tanks drove through the village but one of them fell off a narrow bridge and overturned into a river, drowning the crew.

Shambolic.

Sounds like a PG episode of " 'allo allo". A battlefield equivalent of sticking a sign on someone's back saying "kick me".

Yeah, I’m not sure if reassuring an aggressor is a sound policy.

Your policy of not reassuring a nuclear armed power that a direct confrontation with NATO is on the cards is the worst kind of warmongering drivel.

Wars are caused by the gap between rhetoric and actions.

Just straight up Holocaust denial on your prime time American telly.

All the pro Nazi media over the past few weeks is becoming increasingly sinister.

So all those German Jews, socialists, communists, homosexuals, disabled, Jehovahs Witnesses, etc etc didn't speak German, having lived in Germany all their lives?

Interesting.

@virginton’s hot take today is that appeasement is the answer.

Yeah, I'm really not surprised that you went with the most fatuous, 'Dummies' Guide to International Relations' analogy. The sort of rhetoric-heavy and strategy-light chickenhawk who would have rolled tanks in to support the brave Hungarians in 1956 and lit up the globe like a Christmas tree because 'Munich or something!!!111!!.'

Perhaps you could do some actual fucking reading first to check just how many sanctions and defensive military aid was provided by the West to check German aggression in the 1930s.

Why would I need to, when you will come along with absolute certainty and give us all the answers?

With stories like this i think we can safely say that Russia are moving down the rankings.

Because you fancy not making a rip-roaring c**t of yourself for the first time in years?

Today is not that day though.

Considering Russia signed an agreement in the 90s not to attack Ukraine why would Ukraine trust anything Russia signs?

The 'logic' in your argument is just nonsense: by that standard, no peace treaty would ever be concluded with an aggressor.

Ongoing aid to Ukraine to reconstruct its economy and develop its develop military capability is all that is needed to provide an effective check on a future invasion. Or they can choose to not negotiate and watch Kiev being shelled into New Grozny over the course of years in a fit of pique, but that would be a rather stupid choice.
