That’s exactly why. Edinburgh South has the largest English/Welsh population of any constituency in Scotland so the SNP are never expected to do well there.

Only way I can see that changing is when more of the old Labour die-hards in the former mining communities to the south of Edinburgh pass away. It'll still be a mess, but it should erode the safety net a little bit more.

I quite like Calder, he seems decent enough. No idea who the independent candidate was or what he stood for as got no leaflets or anything and he seemed to not have any presence online. I didn't know about the Tory at that meeting right enough.

Independent candidate is the fella from the Save Calais Woods' group, which has a decent following. I'm sure that his votes will have raised a few eyebrows.

No real change in my ward. The retiring independent has been replaced by another one. It's also nice to see former Tory MSP Mary Scanlon fail miserably.

Morven Reid stood on a platform of her being local and, erm, living there. She had almost zero policies / aims. How did over 600 folk think she was worthy of a vote?

I think she's got in by default pretty much. The Lib Dem and SNP candidates were always going to be elected and the other Independent candidate appears to have done no campaigning at all.

So having no policies seems to be quite a good strategy.

Another 5-way marginal ward in Edinburgh. Exact reverse of the morningside order

f**k sake, thought I'd at least get more than Alba.

Loving the Alba seethe greeting that SNP supporters never game them 2nd vote as they're a pro indy party.

Mate, I'm as pro-indy as they come, but in a local election I care more about when the Kirn Drive cowp's opening up again than when we get an independence referendum.

It doesn't feel like this is the promised "difficult day" for the SNP. In fact it looks like it's going pretty well. Am I missing something or is it too early to tell?

The usual unionist media bollocks.

Something has to give sooner or later. How many different elections do the SNP have to scoosh before we hold another referendum?
