Monarchy debate/discussion

I really don’t give a shit what Sturgeon says about the monarchy; FWIW I reckon it’s nothing more than political expediency.

Whilst I abhor the institution in the grand scheme of thing there’s more important battles to fight and arguing for abolition at this time is a distraction that is not worth the possible negative impact.

Once Scotland is Independent there will be a growing demand for to ditch the monarchy and ultimately the people will decide.  When that time comes I think the people of Scotland will do the right thing.

Agree with every word of that.

The party that advocates a referendum on the monarchy in an independent Scotland may well get my vote - would love to see them ditched within five years of independence but appreciate that it may just take a little longer

I regard Salmond's Alba as another Royalist party.

The Socialist Labour Party, Communist Party, Workers Revolutionary Party and other fringe leftists seem to be dead up here.

Does Scottish Libertarian Party still exist? IIRC those social rejects have put up the odd candidate in Edinburgh but I don't recall them being pro Monarchy.

BiB - that’s more than most people do (or did at the last election).

The Scottish Libertarian Party stood a candidate in my ward at the council elections. They exist - but I can tell you nothing about them, I’m afraid.

So the SNP is just another bunch of Monarchist arse-lickers!

I am in the SNP and I would have them abolished or beheaded tomorrow.

Its almost like people who agree on one thing dont automatically have to agree on everything else.

Cant be that difficult to grasp, eh?

As for Nicola Sturgeon, she wont even be leading the SNP when we become independent, so anything she says now is as relevant as suggesting Rod Stewart might have the Christmas No1.

A democratically-elected President (with term limits as in the US) and Senate are a key factor in determining whom (if anyone) I will consider voting for.

A vote for a pro-Monarchy party is, in effect, supporting the continuation of our Royal subjugation. Similarly, accepting an Honour is to support the patronage of the corrupt establishment.

Sean Connery and Billy Connelly are typical examples of the hypocritical and odious scum who will sell-out their "principles" in exchange for the Royals' baubles.

The best one is the rapper MIA who went from supporting the Tamil Tigers to accepting an MBE in the space of about five minutes.

I’ve got zero respect for anyone who accepts one of these honours

Especially the ones who claim to be working class, absolute sell outs

The better honours roster is made up of the folks who get offered honours and have never accepted. It's a pretty good list.

'The people of Scotland' have had 15 years of ScotchNattery and it has been absolutely bloody.  Everything they have touched has been rancid.

Now I'm not a royalist - unlike Nippy, Quine o' Scots - but one thing recent history tells me is that you can trust 'the people of Scotland' with f**k all.

You'll be applying for the role of Governor General then...

Since we're one nation from Thurso to Truro my chances of being 'Governor General' of Scotchland are limited.

I know I'd be a popular choice, though...

I think this thread has descended into chaos.  I thought it was all about axing the Monarchy.  It says so in the title.

Instead you are squabbling about other things.

Honestly have you never organised a revolution before?

I am seriously disappointed.

Agreed. I've wiped a load of them out. Please stick to the topic, not personal attacks.

Aethelstan has been called the first king of Britain. He had the kings of Alba, Strathclyde and Northumberland (covering modern mainland Scotland) wales and parts of Ireland give him fealty.

Although if i remember rightly the scots king basically just said he would accept overlordship, then completely ignored it in practice.

For a "british" monarchy, not a bad place to start the clock, i suppose.

As part of a settlement in the less than 2 years between Brunaburh and his death. He was in no sense ever king of these territories.
