On the other side of the scale you get the likes of Paul Heaton.  Well, you get Paul Heaton.  Shares out all the income equally to all band members, leaves money behind bars for fans to have a drink on him and keeps ticket prices at sensible levels.

Yep, agreed on Paul Heaton, one of the good guys - Bobby G not so much, sadly.

Also (although I hate their music) I understand that Coldplay split everything between the band, despite Chris Martin being the principal songwriter.

Rick Wright at Pink Floyd is a fun example. He fell out with Roger Waters when making The Wall, and Waters sacked him from the band. But, they needed him for the tour so brought him back as a salaried employee on. He was the only one to make any money as the tour made a loss and Waters (and the other remaining members) earned nothing.

Yet Waters presumably couldn't have sacked Wright without the agreement of Gilmour and Mason. Interesting (for me anyway) to note that when Wright rejoined the band it was initially on a salary before eventually being upgraded to Full Member again.

************

FWIW Floyd's management for the first US Wall tour had extra dates penned in for Cincinnati (IIRC) which would've shifted the tour into profit but Waters didn't think the venue was suitable.

I read Don Felder's autobiography which went into big detail on his time as one of the Eagles. Started as a session musician, they then formed a company that split the money 5 ways including him. He was a full member. This was in the mid-70s.They did this a couple more times as folk left and joined.

When they re-formed in the 90s, they formed another new company that gave more money to Glenn Frey and Don Henley (as they were the famous ones, the songwriters and had had solo careers) and less to Felder, Timothy Schmidt and Joe Walsh. Felder was told to take it or leave it, and he took it. Made huge amounts of cash but felt it was unfair. Kept complaining that the money wasn't being split evenly, and in 2001 they sacked him from the band.

It's an excellent read, his book. @WhiteRoseKillie recommended it to me, if I remember correctly.

Back on topic, Felder admitted that in the 70s he was shagging about behind his wife's back whilst she stayed at home and raised the kids. Then, when his career hit the skids and she was becoming successful in hers, and she cheated on him once, he left her.

That is a really good book, especially liked where he taught another American great to play guitar.

The same great appears in Dave Ghrols autobiography, offering him a drumming job in the 90s.

This story is on the front page of the Daily Record today.

This tweet has been brought up today

No comment from Gillespie or Innes or the band yet.

People are also bringing up that Gillespie sent his kids to private school, despite his frequent socialist proclamations.  I think one of his kids is now a model, co-incidentally getting loads of work from Kate MOss and other mates of their dad.  Up the workers!

Also saw a tweet contrasting the attitude of Gillespie to that of the Manics, who have continued to put aside royalties earned by guitarist and songwriter Richey Edwards since he went missing in 1995.  Not sure exactly how much will be in the account but it's likely to be millions of pounds.

Yeah, it's almost inevitable that the power base of any band will rest with the primary songwriters. Since Gene Simmons of Kiss was in the news yesterday for showing up at PMQs, they're also a good example; their lead guitarist and drummer left at the start of the 80s and Simmons and Paul Stanley carried on with a succession of replacements. When they reformed in the mid-90s, the original two were brought back in as salaried employees rather than partners, and when they left again they brought in two journeymen to basically impersonate them for even less money.

Gene Simmons said he did not want to be in a band, he wanted to be in a brand.

One of the reasons they wore heavy make-up was so any member can be replaced and nobody would really care.  Different drummer - same make-up - Problem solved.

In Star Trek, the same Klingon (or other alien) character can be played by different actors each time and hardly anyone even notices.

Coldplay played Cardiff last week and he arrived by train. Fair play. I’d still rather sand my bellend than listen to them though.
