BFTD
6 minutes ago, L. Brilliant said: What's that based on? He wrote several times about enjoying child porn, and was mates with a convicted sex offender who produced edgelord snuff and child porn fanzines, praising the material that he produced. Folk have tried to excuse it as him being edgy, and that he didn't really enjoy seeing children being abused, but that seems to be based more on fans wanting it not to be true. If you search for "steve albini child abuse" you'll find plenty of reference to it all, but some of the descriptions are unrelentingly unpalatable so I'm tapping out rather than reading that again. Pretty sure any posts quoting it would get pulled, from what I remember. Hopefully he was just a consumer and there won't be other allegations now that he's dead.

Miguel Sanchez
Week 19 update Two deaths this week. First, World Cup winning Argentina manager Cesar Luis Menotti: César Luis Menotti obituary | Football | The Guardian Quote The football manager César Luis Menotti, who has died aged 85, led Argentina to their first ever World Cup trophy in 1978, a 3-1 victory on home territory against the Netherlands in the deafening noise of the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires on a pitch strewn with ticker tape. It was a joyful occasion, but one that for many – including Menotti himself – was soured by the fact that the country was led by a brutal military junta, for whom the win was valuable propaganda. Long-haired and left-leaning, Menotti was, as Esquire magazine once said, “the embodiment of everything the junta opposed”. But there was a symbiotic relationship between the two parties, for Menotti’s job as manager was reliant on the patronage of the dictator Jorge Rafaél Videla, who had come to power in a coup two years earlier, and Videla was wise enough to recognise that Menotti represented Argentina’s best chance of glory. He sounds like an interesting guy whose life and career aren't going to be done justice by an article this size. For as chaotic as the world can seem nowadays, the idea of the World Cup being hosted and won by a country in the midst of civil unrest like this seems completely alien to me. Are things getting better? I don't know. Menotti died at 85 so he's worth 40 Base Points for @choirbairn. He also gets a Solo Shot bonus for a total of 90 points. ================ Second and just announced is film director Roget Corman: Roger Corman, Hollywood mentor and king of the B-movie, dies aged 98 | Roger Corman | The Guardian Quote Roger Corman, the writer and director who helped turn out such low-budget classics as Little Shop of Horrors and gave many of Hollywood’s most famous actors and directors early breaks, has died aged 98. Corman died on Thursday at his home in Santa Monica, California, his daughter Catherine Corman said on Saturday in a statement. “He was generous, open-hearted and kind to all those who knew him,” the statement said. “When asked how he would like to be remembered, he said, ‘I was a film-maker, just that.’” Across a career spanning more than 60 years, Corman developed a cheap and cheerful style that led some to refer to him as the “king of the B-movies”. His films were notable for their low-budget special effects and attention-grabbing titles such as She Gods of Shark Reef (1958) and Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957). Yet he also played a significant role in developing the talents of a number of acclaimed directors, including James Cameron and Martin Scorsese, and launching the careers of actors such as Peter Fonda, Robert De Niro and Sandra Bullock. I've spent a lot of time watching Mark Kermode reviews on youtube so while I don't know that much about films, I know who he was despite not actually having seen any of his films. Corman died at 98 so he's worth 27 Base Points for @Raidernation, with a Solo Shot bonus taking that to 77 points. As a result, the standings look like this: 1. mozam76 402 2. Billy Jean King 380 3.
