Who's Going To Uni?

Recommended Posts

Remember, you aren't judge and jury. While you may not want to speak to him, it doesn't give you permission to try and destroy his life, which is what you seem to want to do, based on things a friend told you. The staff aren't going to throw him out of uni, based on your personal feelings. I'd suggest that while wanting to be moved to a different group is reasonable so you don't have to work with him, what you seem to want is basically a full disclosure, all the students told, and him removed from Uni. And that is not reasonable, and will not be received well by your lecturer.

By any chance are you his best mate?

I don't need to be the judge, he's already been sentenced. He's also already ruined his life when he decided to break the law and take advantage of a minor. I don't mind if he's still in the uni, but I honestly can't see him staying since he won't be able to get the masters(without taking a break to serve his sentence) even the next two years will be difficult if everyone in the year(which apparently they do) know about it and will no doubt be talking about it behind his back(I do see the irony in me saying this) and no one will want to work with him. I will be more reserved when talking to my lecturer(s) though.

I did the basics, albeit I'm doing surveying, so an engineer would be best placed to help you out.

The sentence is suspended because he pled guilty and "cut a deal", again this is from my friend who has spoken to the offender.

Well, I guess the risk is none since we're all at least 18/19 but it's more the fact that I don't want to speak to the guy, ever.

Yeah, but I'm never gonna actually speak, in person, to anyone of here. Well, not in any great length. Whereas, some students are proper mates with this guy and have probably shared personal stuff with him.

I really can't see that cutting a deal will get you off a custodial sentence for, let's just say, raping a minor. Child porn, maybe, but you'd have to be at a very, very small risk of re-offending. As xbl says, you're within your rights not to speak to him yourself, but you also need to be respectful of the fact that he, regardless of what he's done, has the right to an education as much as you have, even if you don't feel that he has. The point I was trying to make is that you have probably spoken to people in your life who have committed crimes of all sorts, but there's no sense in you asking everyone you meet just on the off chance that you're mixing with undesireables. You can't really do much about this guy if he's no danger to you or any other people in your group, however much you might want to.

A suspended sentence doesn't mean that he'll be going to prison at a later date. It basically means that if he misbehaves in any way, shape or form for the duration of that suspension period, he will receive a custodial sentence. As long as he doesn't commit any other crime in that time, he'll not be going to prison.

Believe me, I really do appreciate how you feel about the situation, but there's very little you can do other than request to move groups.

Yeah, it's definitely a bad situation but I'd really rather have not known in the first place. f**k knows what the people in my uni year have been up to.

Business students have to do a lot of group working and for the most part it's fine, but in strategy some people are seriously pissing me off, and I'm a generally affable fellow dry.gif

Oh and I got my application in, got a speed interview on Monday in Dundee (dry.gif),

Uni is the biggest pile of shite ever. I'm in my 4th and final year now. Had planned to quit in the Summer and a combination of everyone making me feel like crap if I didn't go back, and not finding any full time work saw me go back in September. It's only November and I feel like absolute shit because of it.

Going to University is by far the biggest mistake I've made in life.

Do you know exactly what the offence was?

Maybe he was 17 and slept with a 15 year old. Illegal, but hardly crime of the century.

OK - certainly more serious. Do you know that for sure?

I know he was 25, the news article I saw said she was 13 and had quotes from the judge etc so I presume so. He apparently said he was 17 as well.

It doesn't really matter, does it? He's been found guilty and sentenced for his crime. I'm hoping he didn't say anything daft to his lecturer.

I went up to his office but he wasn't in. I'll have to try again tomorrow.

I don't know, I just thought they'd need to make the classmates aware of it.

TBH, I'm not sure why he's still at uni, his sentence has been suspended until the start of what would be his last year in the course. I can't see him getting a job with that on his record.

Sounds to me like you have a bit of growing up to do. I'm with xbl here.

Should the guy have to walk about with a placard informing all about his crime?
