The Way, Way Back

Having heard great things about this I gave it a watch on Saturday. It is the same studio that made Little Miss Sunshine and it is very obvious. Not only do we have some of the same actors, we also have pretty similar themes and tones through the whole film. I was actually a little disappointed by it. Yes there are some nice touches and funny scenes but it all felt a little rushed and I didn't really get into the film. In saying that, Sam Rockwell saves the film. He is absolutely fantastic and his dialogue is superb.

Non-Stop - Liam Neeson is a washed-up air marshall whose plane is hijacked by text message. Drama ensues.

I really liked this. Taut thriller in a confined space with Liam kicking ass and taking names - what's not to like? Read some bad reviews, and I think they must have been smoking the pot. The wife claims that this was a better film than Taken, which is practically heresy, but it's certainly not far off. And I'm not just saying that because of my longtime Julianne Moore obsession

Seed of Chucky

f**k it. This is fabulous. Absolutely brilliant stuff. Anyone wanting a straight horror movie is bang out of luck. This is both ridiculous and ludicrous and doesn't really deliver on the scares. Where it delivers is in just being flat out fun for 90 minutes. It's also helped by a central human role for Jennifer Tilly, which she dives into with both feet. Obviously Tiffany and Chucky are the stars of the show, and while Glen/Glenda isn't really as strong a character, it's close enough for government work.

Rollerball - EXTREEEEEME! Sports enthusiast Chris Klein (the Glee Club doofus from American Pie) enrols in a ultra-camp competitive rollerskating franchise and begins to realise that the organiser (hilariously Russian Jean Reno) is more concerned with profit than safety.

Really surprised that this is twelve years old now; didn't miss much by not seeing it the first time around. This film is monumentally bad, and no doubt managed to offend everyone in the countries depicted. The sport itself is ludicrous and overly-complicated, which is impressive when considering there's practically nothing to it. The plot is ridiculous and lazy, and nothing comes across as being in any way believable or entertaining. There's also a long sequence shot in night vision, presumably for budgetary reasons, which features some bizarre comedy sound effects. There's also an odd obsession with scattering name musicians throughout the background of the film, some of whom aren't even heard to perform. Just awful in every way imaginable.

On the other hand, Rebecca Romain's tits have never looked better, so...tough call! :thumsup2

Hostel - American tourists in Europe are hooked up with a pussy paradise in Slovakia and discover that there's a price to pay for their fun.

This is a much better film than you might imagine, and the 'torture porn' label isn't really applicable either; it's generally pretty restrained, especially compared to the grand guignol of the sequel. It's a nicely taut thriller that keeps you guessing for a while about exactly what's going on behind the scenes, and is pretty satisfying from beginning to end. Recommended, if you can stomach the brief occasions where the restraints slip.

Also, masses of boobs, if you like that sort of thing

22 Jump Street was better than the first one IMO. It's obviously just the same film with a few differences, much like the Hangover series, but there's wee subtle references in it which made it better for me, like when Captain Dickson's office is referred to as a 'cube of ice'. Trés hilar. 9/10.

Calvary. I was expecting a bleakly amusing piece, like a more downbeat In Bruges. Much darker than that, but compelling all the same. Brendan Gleeson is outstanding, and is ably supported by the cast. All in all, a cracking movie, if at times an uncomfortable watch. From the opening line to the shocking if inevitable final scene, I was gripped throughout. 9/10

Story of Jackie Robinson who was the 1st black player to play in Major League Baseball and broke down the colour barrier.

Found it really interesting tho I'm sure a bit of it was fabricated. Any baseball fan such as myself would enjoy it.

Carrie 5/10

A re imagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White, a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother, who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.

Recently added to Netflix. Thought I'd give it a go. I'm not keen on remakes, but this is pretty decent. Julianne Moore and Chloë Grace Moretz are Mother and Daughter.

First Blood.

Haven't seen this since I was a teenager. Either I misremembered it or I'm thinking of a different film, but i remember it being pretty crap but watching it last night I thought it was brilliant.

Troll Hunter - a Norwegian film with subtitles where the Norwegian government hire a guy to kill trolls and they plant dead bears/make up tornados etc to hide the trolls and the destruction the trolls have caused from the public

Naturally a team of students are filming the whole thing. It's quite interesting though the graphics ain't the best. When one of the students dies there is no sympathy at all from the other two students which was weird and the film doesn't get a conclusion with the students running away from the government who are trying to get the footage of the trolls off them.

7/10 worth a watch
