Boostin' Kev
Quite fancy seeing this. I don't mind a slow movie as long as it gives the impression it's going somewhere as opposed to padding the film out. Recommended then? Yeah it was really good. A guy who's business/life is coming under attack from various angles fights adversity to work things out. All set to the backdrop of NYC 1981, the most violent year in recorded history of the city. Very little action which i dont mind as long as the characters are good.
sjc
My last comment on the director was a statement in general- I haven't seen Vice, so can't contribute anything to the discussion, other than that it's an 8-figure studio movie- definitely not an arthouse number. I sympathise with Anderson; he was flawless as the boy director and even though he tries something completely different every time, his work only seems to get better - his last two films were two of the best of this century so far - thus the acts are getting harder to follow. I wouldn't call this film arthouse either tbh......was more generalising about the types that might like the film. I wouldn't really call the directing of this film original either......was effectively Fear & Loathing in Las Vagas meets The Usual Suspects meets Scooby Doo! I agree he's directed some good films in the past though.

Jupiter Jazz
was effectively Fear & Loathing in Las Vagas meets The Usual Suspects meets Scooby Doo! Thats a bad thing? On holiday next week and will be making a point of seeing Inherent Vice, seems to be dividing opinion as most Anderson films do. He's up there with the Coens as best director out there for me.

Loses marks for being a bit too serious, a bit too straightforward in it's storytelling, but still well worth seeing. -

Christophe
Cry-Baby 7/10 Excellent knockabout teen-gang trash fun with Johnny Depp, Ricki Lake, Traci Lords, Iggy Pop and more. Edited January 31, 2015 by Christophe -

BFTD
Speaking of Traci Lords, I watched a bunch of her dodgy teenage porn movies The Tommyknockers the other day, which was the first Stephen King book that I read when it was new out. It's pretty faithful to the book, but is plagued by the usual King problem of the written word being hard to translate to moving pictures. The acting is almost universally dreadful (except for CSI's Marg Helgenberger, pre-silicon and collagen), and the whole thing comes across as very silly indeed, á la Dreamcatcher. Still worth a look for the comedy value, although it's nowhere near as funny as The Langoliers.
airdrieman
Saw Birdman yesterday. An excellent filming with some tremendous performances and cinematography. Best of the Oscar nominated films that I've seen. Does anyone know if Foxcatcher is still out? Really want to go see it but can't see it listed anywhere.
Boostin' Kev
Think its still on in the big cinemas. Watched The Imitation Game. Cant believe how much I enjoyed it compared to what i was expecting beforehand. A solid 8/10 and probably the best of the Oscar nominated films ive seen so far.
Savage Henry
The Rum Diary A take on pre-Gonzo Hunter S. Thompson, with Johnny Depp travelling to Puerto Rico as a journalist, only to discover the venal underbelly of the apparently idyllic scene. Gentle paced and humorous, the director also made Withnail and I, which is totally different in tone and topic yet not a million miles away either. Some great character actors in this, Aaron Eckhart plays a complete sleazebag with a little too much ease, and Giovanni Ribisi basically plays Tom Waits. I thought it was splendid. 7/10
BFTD
The Believers - 80s Martin Sheen movie about a voodoo cult sacrificing children. This reminded me of both The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby for some reason, but it's nowhere near as good as either. Doesn't help that the opening scene is made amusing by Sheen's hysterical reaction. It's an acceptable watch if you've nothing better to do, but it doesn't really go anywhere and frankly feels like a silly overreaction to something in the news at the time, like the whole Satanic Panic thing. Trust - family drama by Ross from Friends about a teenage girl who's groomed by an internet predator, and the effect this has on everyone involved. It feels like an information piece about the process that families go through in this kind of situation, as opposed to the wake-up-call shocker Megan is Missing, and it's pretty good. Acting is believable for the most part, and it deliberately subverts most of the tropes that you'd expect from this sort of film. It also (very) briefly touches on the hypocrisy of the advertising industry (in which father Clive Owen works), where pubescent girls are sexualised for our enjoyment on a regular basis. The ending may come across as a bit of a let-down, but fits perfectly with the rest of the film. Not bad at all.
The Real Saints
Does anyone know if Foxcatcher is still out? Really want to go see it but can't see it listed anywhere. It will probably be opening in Perth soon if you are willing to wait until after the Oscars.

Boostin' Kev
If you like good war films I'd steer well clear was like a long and corny yank pro war commercial.

Twinkle
Interstellar Wasnt a bad film however did end up a bit all over the place. Considering its nearly 3 hours long, i dont think i would invest that time watching it again. Some of the space shots etc are exceptional though
