A Most Violent Year 7/10

Good film this, Oscar Isaac (again brilliant) gotta be one of the best actors out there at the moment going by tonight's viewing. Bit on the dry side overall though really.

Watched it yesterday. Great film might be a bit slow for some though.

Robin Hood.

I think this got widely panned on its release.

It's daft, at times nonsensical, the accents are all over the place - although Russell Crowe is far from the worst culprit - and the costumes are rubbish. But I enjoyed it in a brainless way. Probably doesn't hurt that half the cast of Game of Thrones season 1 is in it.

5/10

Inherent Vice.

Kind of reminded me of a cross between Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas and The Usual Suspects but fcuking terrible.

It was that bad there were people walking out the cinema throughout!

Might be one of those films that's better on the 2nd viewing......if anyones brave enough to attempt that.

All Paul Thomas Anderson's films improve on the second viewing, become even better after the third, and it's not unusual for them to achieve masterpiece status after the fourth.

Yeh.....I kind of think it'll be a "cult" hit with the pretenious arthouse types.

For me it was slow, incoherent and the script was cliche riddled pish.....each to their own but given that at least a dozen people walked out well before the end I don't think I'll be the only critic of this film.

Quite fancy seeing this. I don't mind a slow movie as long as it gives the impression it's going somewhere as opposed to padding the film out.

Recommended then?

My last comment on the director was a statement in general- I haven't seen Vice, so can't contribute anything to the discussion, other than that it's an 8-figure studio movie- definitely not an arthouse number. I sympathise with Anderson; he was flawless as the boy director and even though he tries something completely different every time, his work only seems to get better - his last two films were two of the best of this century so far - thus the acts are getting harder to follow.

Yeah it was really good. A guy who's business/life is coming under attack from various angles fights adversity to work things out. All set to the backdrop of NYC 1981, the most violent year in recorded history of the city. Very little action which i dont mind as long as the characters are good.

I wouldn't call this film arthouse either tbh......was more generalising about the types that might like the film.

I wouldn't really call the directing of this film original either......was effectively Fear & Loathing in Las Vagas meets The Usual Suspects meets Scooby Doo!

I agree he's directed some good films in the past though.

Thats a bad thing?

On holiday next week and will be making a point of seeing Inherent Vice, seems to be dividing opinion as most Anderson films do. He's up there with the Coens as best director out there for me.

Loses marks for being a bit too serious, a bit too straightforward in it's storytelling, but still well worth seeing.

Speaking of Traci Lords, I watched a bunch of her dodgy teenage porn movies The Tommyknockers the other day, which was the first Stephen King book that I read when it was new out. It's pretty faithful to the book, but is plagued by the usual King problem of the written word being hard to translate to moving pictures. The acting is almost universally dreadful (except for CSI's Marg Helgenberger, pre-silicon and collagen), and the whole thing comes across as very silly indeed, á la Dreamcatcher. Still worth a look for the comedy value, although it's nowhere near as funny as The Langoliers.
