Catalonia

I think before Sunday's debacle it was roughly the same or less in Catalonia. You're probably right now. It would be a huge mistake for the SNP to link our case with Catalonia though, totally different histories. Catalonia has never been an independent state for one, only a subservient principality. And you have the bits in France that may want to join. And the potential domino effect on other regions of Spain. I think a Federal arrangement is what they should be thinking about, EU membership wouldn't be an issue then.

Which would have been easily the most popular option among Catalans if it was on the table, but Spain has stonewalled and obfuscated at every turn, making it clear that they'll never allow them more autonomy and going to the courts to ensure respective Catalan governments were unable to pursue that goal. This is what's pushed them to hold referenda on independence in the first place, and Madrid has now added state-sponsored violence into the mix to push them further toward the point of no return.

I find the links between the SNP/Catalonia a bit weird also; I'll admit I'm a bit ignorant but is Catalonia not  a very wealthy area? It's not going to turn into some socialist utopia in the same way most folk think an indy Scotland will.

It's relatively wealthy by Spanish Standards but it's mid table in terms of the Eurozone.

Slightly off topic, but how would posters feel if the people of Greater London decided that they wanted to be a seperate city state?

Actually said this a long while ago that when Scotland gains it's independence not only the UK will fragment but England will too

I'd be cool so long as they took the BofE, Treasury and the National Debt with them.

Interesting. I was speaking to a Spanish guy at work who stated that by constitution any referendum on catalan independence must be offered to the whole of Spain.

Any constitutional amendment (which would be required) needs the backing of both houses (pretty sure there is some requirement for a fresh election too) as well as a referendum in both Spain and Catalonia. So yeah, not easy

Also, pique booed by fans who shouted at him to get out at a Spanish open training session. Hope he tells them to shove their team

Lets face it, it practically is.

And we're all paying for it.

Yep, there the c***s that are benefiting from the broad shoulders the most.

The King has basically just said exactly what you'd expect a medieval relic to say.

Vote was illegal, organisers put themselves outside the law. SPAIN will recover from this. Catalan society is fractured. Catalonia enjoys democracy and human rights within Spain (lol)

Source?

Just rumour at the moment, but I don't see they have much choice now. Declare UDI and hope the world is watching following the inevitable violence and possible imprisonment of the Catalan leaders.

Not sure if that is true,as i understand it there is no mechanism in the constitution to have any referendum across Spain.

You don't understand it.

Fair fucks to the Catalan leaders. Looks like the tin pail and violent crackdowns in the short term and hope international outcry kicks in.
