The Ultimate Super Ayr Thread

A hangover from last season was probably inevitable, but our dreadful recruitment in the Summer has really burst our bubble.  I’ve still got no idea why we signed McGeady.  Bangala can sort of be defended on the basis that we didn’t know what we were getting and took a recommendation from presumably a trusted contact.  McGeady on the other hand was obviously heading for the glue factory given his age and after his serious injury at Hibs and was just a stupid gamble that only makes some sense if you assume he will shortly be our next manager.

The situation with Bullen is really starting to drift.  The support seems to have lost faith in both him and the coaching setup, but more importantly the club don’t seem to know if they still believe in it either as they would surely have addressed his contract situation otherwise.  Or maybe Bullen himself has indicated he doesn’t want to stay.  Either way, just feels like a bit of limbo land at the moment, scraping along the bottom hoping that we scramble enough points to finish above Morton/Queen’s Park/Arbroath/Airdrie.

Apathy has set in amongst a lot of our supporters which in a way is even worse that fans complaining. Bullen’s job seems to be as safe as houses as I got the impression that Mathie thought it was laughable that fans were asking questions about him at the recent Q and A. I genuinely don’t think Bullen will be sacked until the club are cut adrift in 9th or 10th which at that point it’ll probably be too late for a new guy to make any great difference.

Whenever fans dare complain the clubs default position seems to be to stick up a bit of construction porn on social media. In that respect Smith is doing great and fair play to him for that as it looks great along with the hub however we are still getting so much wrong on and off the pitch.

I’ve said it before and was shot down in flames but the fact we as a full time club don’t have a supporters bus running to away games is embarrasing, particularly with the #weareunited patter that’s constantly used.

I don't know if it's just me but from the time I've been on P&B, there has never been a time where I've seen as little interest on the team in here.

Not sure if it's not helped just now due to what feels like the massive gap between league games due to cups and postponements along with no home game in like the last 6 weeks.

You have to look at Raith to see what we've done wrong as they've completely overtaken us on and off the park since their takeover which happened a lot more recently than ours...

I’m not sure if the excitement around the Euro’s plays into it too.

My thoughts have been fully on that, and haven’t given Ayr much of a thought - part of it is definitely apathy though. I’m not even bothered about trying to watch the game tomorrow.

The changes to infrastructure are only good for the club however they kind of pale into insignificance if the ‘product’ on the pitch is utter shite.

Raith are doing exactly what we should have been doing on and off the pitch.

A heavy defeat tomorrow and he’s got to go IMO.

I've just been scunnered about everything on the pitch. It's hard to get excited about. We've been really poor to watch for the vast majority of the last 2/3 years. We're atrocious at home and we've completely fluffed a lot of big games during that time as well, which can be hard to take continually.

I'm really hoping things improve, but I can't see it happening any time soon as long we have the current manager and large portions of the current squad. What would concern me is who we have in the dugout next if Bullen were to go in the next wee while (not that I see it happening). I mean, look at the past few appointments.

That's not to say the off the pitch stuff isn't very exciting and gives me hope of good foundations for the future.  But that sentiment can only go so far sometimes.

When folk say "yeh but look at the bigger picture", I want to ask them what the bigger picture of 13 wins from the last 42 home league games says to them? Things need to improve there, clearly.

Particularly galling is that Raith were coming off the back of the Goodwillie debacle, with fans and sponsors deserting them in droves.

Their turnaround within a few months is remarkable whereas we have regressed and show no signs of doing anything about it.

Anyone wondering why Somerset has been an absolute morgue this season only needs to have watched the game tonight.  Two good teams passing the ball well, attacking, scoring goals.  Watching Ayr is just an absolute chore at the moment and has been for an awful long time now, with only Dipo really raising spirits over the last 3/4 seasons.  We are a badly managed, badly coached team, devoid of shape or style completely hamstrung by some of the most incompetent recruitment I’ve seen in 40 years supporting the club.

I do feel sorry for Dave Smith in that he is clearly doing his part of the field, but is being completely let down by alleged “football people” from Mathie and Bullen all the way down.

The recruitment has been very poor generally - especially in terms of forward planning but it isn’t anything like some of the worst. I guess that’s mainly because it has been so horrific at times as opposed to a compliment to the current mess though.

There have still been some good signings in Chalmers, Dowds, Murphy, Stanger and potentially Sylla.

This now sounds kind of like a could be worse style post, but it absolutely isn’t 😂 They need to sort it out in January. Even our current side should be challenging for fourth though, as the other teams are so so poor!

There are a few things, transfer windows have stopped most of the signing chat. The club not putting out any information on injuries, no hints about players coming in or out like McCall did. The bulk of our signings are virtual unknowns outside of the Vanarama trophy anyway.

The security of the coaching team.
There really isn’t much to talk about other than results and that only lasts a day or so.
The club have to generate interest and excitement and they don’t really.

If an expected defeat tomorrow happens, we will play our first game at Somerset in over a month next week. You are going in to the Christmas period where money and time are tight for some folk and if folk were 50/50 about going, they probably won’t bother.

Morton signing Strapp today will give them a bit of a lift from their run of form.

That's unbelievable Strapp has went back there considering the previous level of falling out

Thing is, recruitment isn’t just about the shite we have signed.  It’s about what we haven’t signed.  The failure to replace the full backs, the failure to sign a centre forward to replace Dipo (who we knew was leaving in January), the failure to sign experience in the middle of the park, the failure to sign a different type of midfielder to compliment the too similar Dempsey and Murdoch, the failure to sign an experienced centre half to upgrade the perma crocked Musonda and the ultimately not good enough McGinty..   But then Bullen has no idea how he wants to set up, so do we even know what we’re looking for?  The completely scattergun approach to recruitment in the Summer was a demonstration that there is no plan, and no clue of how this is all supposed to fit together.  Our sole tactic last season was to give the ball to Dipo.  This season the sole tactic is to give the ball to Chalmers, which teams have already sussed out.

Yeah - I absolutely agree with you, that’s what I was getting at in terms of the forward planning bit.

There definitely wasn’t a coherent plan, we have signed some bits of quality but it very much strikes you as just signing decent players that are available as opposed to being part of a bigger plan.

Playing a 4-4-2, with two very attacking wide players while having poor full backs and an inexperienced central midfield is the prime example.

Is part of it down to a warped loyalty to players who were already at the club?

There’s far better players out there than Paddy Reading and Nick McAllister yet hes stuck by them for whatever reason despite the awful performances
