Haven't seen Talbot this season but I saw Cove play Hearts, obviously they were out of their depth but I really didn't see anything special, just a fit and organised team. The Highland League in general seems to be relatively weaker of late, they took a collective hiding in the first round and the three games I've seen at that level this season have been worthy, physical but a little uninspired. Cove have to be favourites but that price, for any non-league side against Auchinleck Talbot, looks generous.

Yeah, the HL doesn't seem that great overall these days and Talbot  play against harder opposition week to week in the league.

Cove seem a very handy side and may well win the match with a bit to spare but knowing how well Talbot can raise their game in cup matches under Sloan it's a price that is bound to attract plenty of nibbles.

Usually avoid Cove matches, due to their surname, but haven't been to their new ground yet and this tie looks a curiosity to say the least - with the best HL side vs what has consistently been the strongest junior side.

Will also mean I have an excuse not to listen to the radio commentary from Tynecastle.

Anyone know if it is it easy enough to get parked and just rock up at their new place...................or do they want you to buy tickets?

I've only been to the Hearts game there so not typical, but I'd be surprised if tickets were worth getting in advance. Maybe if you want the stand, as it's small and they get a decent hospitality crowd. If you want covered or elevated standing get there early, they only have two wee shed things on the far side. Beechwood Park is a far superior place to watch football, and that's before you get to the bloody terrible pitch.

I'd imagine that it shouldn't be difficult to park in the industrial estate on a Saturday. I used public transport, the bus up from the city centre is pretty slow and infrequent.

It's an intriguing match-up, could be a cracker.

The magic of the Cup

What's the point in fining an amateur team for stuff like that? Unnecessary, just issue a slap on the wrist written warning.

I don't imagine the amateur team has been scrupling over taking the prizemoney! Rules are rules. St Mirren were ordered to replay against Spartans a few years ago when insufficient outfielders were U21, IIRC.

For being "out of their depth" and Hearts playing a protest 2-1 was a decent score for Cove. They beat Raith Rovers as well in that section. Completely agree the price is massive though.

I would have to disagree with that. The no 3 Mastrick-Cove bus is every 12 minutes even on a Saturday and takes 18 minutes from Bridge Street. You get off before you reach the big Altens roundabout, the stop is called Souter Head Road, or just ask the driver for IKEA.

Make sure you follow the crowds and don't go left (south) of IKEA like I did or you'll never reach the ground. You'll be about 20 yards away from it facing a locked gate and have to walk past the travelling people's site a second time

The whole estate is double yellows although I don't know if they enforce it on a matchday. The official car park was full when I went but a lot of locals parked in a business on the right just before it, probably FMC. All the other businesses seemed to have locked gates.

The Balmoral Chicken pies are decent.

What's the purpose of making a team list a second goalkeeper? It didn't impact the outcome of the tie in Shortlees favour and was a rare opportunity for them to play in a game which made them some cash. Don't see the need for the SFA to profit off of that.

The scoreline was very respectable but I never felt Hearts were in any danger even though they were very rusty up front. Maybe I'm being too harsh, but I'd have expected 2/1 rather than, what did it start at, 9/1?

Not much of late in the real Scottish though. Last five years include defeats to both Edinburgh city ( when in LL) and to Cumbernauld Colts

The rules on substitutes were changed a couple of years ago.  They previously stipulated that teams should have no fewer than 5 (I think) and no more than 7. Linlithgow had to go to Wick for a Tuesday night tie and we just couldn't get that number of boys off work. There was potential for us to be censured but that would have just been stupid.

So the rules were revamped and the minimum requirement dropped but the need for a sub keeper was added in recognition that it's a specialist position.

You can't list an outfield player as a sub keeper. The named substitute must be registered with the SFA as a goalkeeper  (all players are listed with a team position - keeper, defender, midfielder or striker).

Agree the Cove v Talbot game looks intriguing, hence why I'm on my way there just now (need to be in Aberdeen this evening anyway)

One of these games to trigger the annual Highland 'pub' League' vs juniors bitchfest, so a bit of petty baggage for both sides who'll have a point to prove.

As for folk avoiding Cove just because they have the word Rangers in their name, jeez. Hopefully get a decent crowd today, especially with the Dons being away.

The third round draw is at 5.45pm on Saturday.

Is it too much to ask for a decent away tie?

Meadowbank always seemed to get bloody Morton (and get beat by bloody Morton) back in the day so to revive a tradition you'll be getting a trip to Ainslie Park to play City.

You read it here first (square ball is marked)!

Not the greatest game in the world but hard fought by both. Cove should probably feel unlucky not to have had the game settled before Talbot came on strong in the 2nd half and equalised.
1st visit to new ground and fairly impressed, enjoyed a couple of cans of T in the sun before the game in the Fanzone too.

Yeah. Ref was a bit whistle happy I thought. A couple of missed chances for Cove could've put paid to Talbot earlier on, but wasn't to be. Talbot better team in second half, Cove seemed happy to knock the ball about without putting in any crosses. Was at the wrong end for the penalty decision, but it seemed to push Talbot on and Cove got frustrated. Would expect Talbot to prevail in the replay.
